We lucked out over here in Fort Lauderdale. Didn't even get strong winds and barely any rain from hurricane Michael. But total disaster for many in the panhandle. Especially Mexico City..... I feel terrible for them.

Just to keep everyone updated, the Traveler is currently in MA. It was in VA prior to that, but the host wasn’t able to record any videos. I had asked her to at least post some photos or tell about her time with it, but I guess she elected not to. Hopefully the current host will pop on here soon with something to share.

Let the bow flow.

Great to hear. If anyone wants to help me keep track of the tagging locations, I would appreciate it. Seems like we are not getting everyone to do that either. 🙁

Out of interest - can we members please be told who the last/current host actually is (or was if it's now forwarded ?).

"currently in MA" means not a lot to me and other non-USA members!   From what I see in the thread, it was shipped onwards from the last host @stirlingite771 11th October - it'll soon be 11 January - so much for the four weeks per host.

[ Apologies - just had to get that off my chest folks!!!   It's all OK - I'm not really angry, not worth it - but....   we have had a stream of non-participants (takers, but not sharers) recently...   And, compared to the "early days" where hosts were true to the concept and posted LOADS of videos and/or pictures, the enthusiasm now just seems to have mostly evaporated (other than from the "takers" - no I won't name names - they already know who they are - and they probably don't visit the forum anyway...) ]

I'm just wondering, is there anything we can think of to regenerate interest from truly active members who are happy to post on the forum (i.e. posts, photos, even videos if they are happy to?)    Let's think about it, and get The Traveler really active once again....

So - here's MY thoughts for encouragement of ACTIVE members' participation in her travels -

If any (relatively) new to the forum members, who ARE active on the forum, and EVEN if you are a beginner - remember this ( and I know, this is a HUGE thread to read through, but you SHOULD go back to the start and explore what it is all about ) - the story is about THE TRAVELER - and NOT the host - if you choose to sign up to host The Traveler - you do not NEED to be some sort of virtuoso on violin - you just need to be able to take a few pictures of The Traveler, write about your time with her, and, only if you are happy to, play something and share the video.  It's easy, I mean REALLY easy, and besides that, it's FUN !!!!

Sign up (if you are a sharer and not just a taker) !

Apologies once again if I sounded angry - in a sense I am when I look back on the earlier days - let's get this project back on track.  exactly

I hear ya, Billy. It's sad to see the project fall into just being brief mentions of what states it is has been in, and no documentation. What fun is that?

I am not ready right now, but I would love to take it out for a really good cup of coffee, a catfish dinner, and a trip to the Reelfoot Lake, the largest natural eagle estuary in the northern hemisphere.

Reelfoot Lake State Park is located in the northwest corner of Tennessee and is noted for its fishing, boating and wildlife viewing. The 15,000 acre lake was created by a series of violent earthquakes in 1811-1812 that caused the Mississippi River to flow backwards for a short period of time, creating Reelfoot Lake.

The park’s ecosystem is unlike any other place in Tennessee. Reelfoot lake is a flooded forest. While Majestic Cypress trees rise above the water, below the surface are many submerged Cypress stumps. A variety of aquatic plants and flowers occupy the shoreline and saturate the shallow water. The lake harbors almost every kind of shore and wading bird as well as golden and American bald eagles.

Yes, I used to be a tour guide there and yes I still have the first part of the speech memorized right up to the over 33 species of snakes, including the cottonmouth, pygmy and timber rattlesnakes. Please, follow me.

Sorry for the length of detail.

It seems though, that the traveller is a worthy time investment in the creation of a historical instrument. One that has travelled the world, been held by so many musicians, and from what I understand, plays beautifully. Surprised to hear that there aren't people clambering with the words "me next, me next."

So... I've gone back and forth on whether I want to host the Traveler. My main concern is whether I'd be able to ship it without damaging it. Are there packing/shipping instructions anywhere in this thread?

Hia @AndrewH - as far as I know, there;s nothing specific mentioned - but - to put your mind at rest - (a) it is in a hard-case (b) That is then separately boxed in a much larger carton (to include all the little mementos hosts have left) with lots of these polystyrene "chips".  (c) With care during ownership (and obviously dependent on shipping handling as well) the same outer carton can normally be re-used several times for onward shipment to the next host, and finally (d) it has made it unscathed from USA to UK, back to USA, out to Australia, long sea journey to Brazil and now back in USA.

There are various "thoughts" about insurance value for shipment mentioned somewhere in the thread - it's "real" value is obviously nothing great, but we can't really insure it for it's "sentimental value" - when I shipped it I settled on $400 insurance - at least that pretty much gets a reasonable beginner/early-intermediate instrument like the FM Concert etc, were the worst to happen !

Hope to see the Traveler traveling soon and to see pictures and videos. It’s such a beautiful and fun ‘project’.

@BillyG I totally understand where you are coming from. I tried my best to showcase the traveler and then my computer just decided it wasn't gonna read anything from any device so I couldn't upload videos anymore... :/ It was also kinda frustrating to not get an update because I wasn't sure if the girl from VA got my package! I was checking daily on the forum for an update. Peace of mind would be great for that purpose as well.

Sorry for the late reply. Things are hectic for me and it's hard to find the time to jump on here. And it's getting even harder for me to keep up with the Traveler and make sure it stays on the move. So I'm asking again (for the third time) if anyone wants to take over, that would be great. If not, I'll continue to do what I can.

As far as posting who the hosts are... some people who host the traveler are not on this forum (at least not that I know of), so all I have is their real name, no nickname. Out of privacy and security concerns, I don't want to post a person's real name without their direct permission. I ask each person to come to the forum and introduce themselves and post something about the fiddle. I also always ask for a tracking number when it ships. I don't always get what I ask for, and when I do, it's sometimes well after the fact.

There are only a few names left on the list and most of them are repeat hosts. Again, if anyone wants to take over and maybe even try drum up some new business, that would be great. Any takers?

Let the bow flow.

Thanks for the feedback @fiddle chick !  I appreciate your effort with this, it can't be easy 🙂

Of course, people are allowed to protect their anonymity - my apologies - I didn't realize that apparently non-forum members could be hosts - still makes me wonder then how they would communicate their time with The Traveler ?   dunno

No matter....   I had been in touch with Mr. Jim @Worldfiddler and @TerryT and of course myself - and we would also be happy to play host a second time, but in attempt at fairness to the many newcomers here, we're holding back from officially requesting again to give others the opportunity.   As I say, only fair.

Personally, I would like to assist if I could, but, living outwith the primary area of interest it would be really difficult in terms of timezones and costly in 'phone calls (that's how I arranged The Traveler's transition between 4 of us in the UK, basically by swapping phone numbers - email tends to get ignored, missed, unread etc etc etc) - and - of course - we were all actual forum members, so it was never an issue....

Keep up the good work as best you can and thanx_gif again !
