It's so weird though because I have been wanting on that stage for years and last year he started open mic night. So I got on the stage but was still so nervous. This year, tahdahhh, I am comfortable. Of course it is just an old road house and not very many in the audience on Thursday nights, but this stage has had some of the best bands in Alaska on it. But it's free beer if you are playing and good practice playing with people and songs I am not already familiar with sometimes. I mostly follow voice, so when someone is singing off notes, even on a song I am familiar with, (3rd song) it really throws me off. But I am there to learn and practice so...
I'm leaving on Thursday to go to Chickenstock. It's a funky music festival in the middle of Alaska in a village called Chicken. One of these days, I AM going to be invited to play there. As it is, there are a lot of jamming going on in campsites all over.

Well the Traveler made it to Chicken and back. Here it is being played by my friend Rachel DeTemple. She played with several of the bands at Chickenstock and has one of her own, Fireweed Fiddle. I felt too self conscience to asked to be filmed while playing around so many professionals. Eh.
Chicken was settled by gold miners in the late 19th-century and in 1902 the local post office was established requiring a community name. Due to the prevalence of ptarmigan in the area that name was suggested as the official name for the new community. However, the spelling could not be agreed on and Chicken was used to avoid embarrassment.[3] A portion of Chicken, with buildings from the early 1900s and the F.E. Company Dredge No. 4 (Pedro Dredge) is listed on the National Register of Historical Places as the Chicken Historic District. Chicken is the outpost for the 40 Mile mining district. There are still active gold mines in this area. Enough gold was mined here to make it worthwhile to haul huge gold dredges to this remote location. There are still several inactive gold dredges in the Chicken area.

@Georganne thanks for posting! That was fun to watch and listen to. What tune was she playing? It sounded like she was playing big sciota or little pine siskin. Also..did the momma moose get angry when she passed through? 🙂 looked like that couldve been an interesting moment based on my national geographic moose knowledge!

Thanks @GregW. I think she said it was Cherokee Shuffle. That mamma lives around there so is used to people in the summer. They just walked on through. But yea, normally you don't want to mess with moose, especially mamma moose. They are more dangerous then bears!

Ah yeah...thats it.."Cherokee shuffle" lol it sounded so familiar but I couldn't think what it was. Great playing just my bad memory. I haven't even attempted that one on fiddle but I crashed and burned trying to flat pick it and just gave up. Looked like a fun festival and thanks again for posting!

The Traveler does the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival.
WOW Georganne! That was awesome! I loved how you were smiling the whole time. Looked like you had a blast. The lead singer has a voice doesn't she!? That last tune was my favorite but what was the instrumental around 4:40? Very cool. Just all around very neat. Thanks for sharing that one! Great job.
