@Georganne and others.  Please count me out.  Wife would get very suspicious if she saw yet another violin delivery at the homestead.  I am concentrating this year on performing hole in heart surgery on various string instruments and finally figuring out how to make a violin bow out of laminated strips of bamboo.

I can't commit right now, I'm limiting my playing time because of an ongoing shoulder injury. Ask me again in a few months.

I guess I let this thread slip through the cracks. Honestly I haven't even thought to check it out.

When I seen my name on the list I had to go back and attempt to figure out what this was and how it works. Along the way I seen and heard some great music by some great members here, cid being the last I think? Great playing BTW cid.

I believe I only had a precursory  overview of how to make sure everyone knows what's going on since I believe this is the fuel that fires some of the interest 🙂

I am open to taking her and giving her a few new experiences in these parts. We are in the midst of winter here and outside isn't the most pleasant until April. Then it's beautiful. If I get her sooner than that she will just have to visit a few Irish sessions indoors and maybe the stray outdoor location between snow and sleet.

If you send her here, I will need to make sure I'm abiding by the rules and that I don't keep her too long. I'm thinking only maybe a few weeks to a month? Or has that changed? Just let me know either way 🙂

@Georganne - being in the UK ( as is @jim_dunleavey - who has already responded with a "not at the moment") - sure I AM SUPER HAPPY TO RE-HOST The Traveler more or less 3 years on ( and happy to pay the shipping charges into Europe - most of you being States-side )

I should add that there are two names missing in the list - these being

@Worldfiddler ( a.k.a. Mr. Jim - awesome fiddler dude )

and

@TerryT ( Terry Taylor )

They are missing from the list for some obscure reason I simply cannot understand, because they WERE both hosts in the past when I got The Traveler into the UK

Anyways - sure - please add me - happy to re-host and as I say - international shipping charges to UK - not an issue - I can either settle with the sender (last host) directly via a PayPal payment or with FiddlerShop if it comes via them - not an issue...  Easy..

As being in interior Alaska, I totally understand needing it to be summer for the full benefits of seeing the fiddle in unique locations.  The time frame is flexible since we no longer have an extensive lists of people waiting.

How I came up with the list of names was to just look under members and listed those who were marked as regulars, more then 100 posts and have posted in the last two months....The two you mentioned haven't posted since last year.  Maybe message them and ask them to get active again. I would love to add them to the list.

Anyways, consider yourself added.

@BillyG and others.  This post is more than a little immature since I have not performed the operation yet.  I intend to take a couple of Chinese 4/4 violins and perform a hole in heart operation to turn them into viola.  I will also put on a set of knilling perfection pegs on them.  Assuming the operation works, would it make sense to make a second traveler out of one so the forum community can try it as an inexpensive doubler?

@Irv - I think that is an awesome idea. Having a second travelling instrument is a reasonable plan - although always well packed during her shipment from host to host, there is always that background fear of "hope it survives" or "hope it doesn't get lost" and so on.   If (when!) your project comes to fruition we'd have to give it a different name to clearly identify which "Traveler" it was, and, probably I guess, start a second thread dedicated to it.  I'm sure the community will also chip-in with support items such as bows, rests, rosins, a hard-case and so on.

Thanks very much for the kind offer, and keep us advised !

@Georganne

...sorry I don't know if I'm doing that return messaging thing right.

But, sure thing, I'll go on the list.....if no one minds hearing me screeching away in Texas. Of course I'll have to get up the nerve to make a video (little terrified!)

@BillyG and others.  I can swing adding an Wittner Isny shoulder rest to it as well.  The nice thing about those is it is so adjustable, but other rests can be used if necessary while keeping the mounting bracket in place.

It would be nice to create a violin/viola case that would not require additional packaging to ship it.  I have a very old German case made out of moulded canvas impregnated with cement (constructed like a paper egg container).  Surprisingly light weight.  I bet it would be even better if I substituted some latex paint for water in the mix.

Cushions made from that new mattress padding would be excellent.

I have used continuous aluminum door “Roton” hinges with plastic bearings for heavily used institutional buildings (campus libraries, for example).  That would take a lot of abuse, but aluminum and concrete do not play well.

@Fiddlerman and others

I am trying to create a little story about the Traveler to include in the case. I wanted to include the places, countries, it has been. I can’t tell ny the map because it shows me off the coast of Africa (if I remember correctly). It shows correctly on Fiddlerman's map when he looks. It always says my browser does not support it when I click the link to see the map. It does not matter what I use, computer, iPad, etc. So, could someone tell me exactly what countries the Traveler has been to?

I have the following:

USA

ENGLAND

SCOTLAND

DENMARK

SOUTH AMERICA SOMEWHERE(?) I think it was somewhere in South America, but I can’t tell what country and am not sure the violin is showing up in the right place anyway.

WAS IT EVER IN AUSTRALIA? I thought it was, but there is not violin on the map in Australia.

Please delete any errors I have in the list, and add any I have missed.

I am not listing each US state separately. I am just listing countries.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

This is not going to be a heavy hardcover item to add to case. There will be blank lined pages for hosts to put there name and/or username, and whatever part of their location they want to share (ie in the States, maybe the state and town/village/city), the date received and date sent to next host, new host screen name. No more than that so the pages do not get filled too quickly. It is not meant to be a travel brochure. It is just a guest log, like registering in to a hotel.

So, any help in what countries she has visited will be very helpful. I will be shipping her soon, so if I don’t get replies soon, I will send the log off to the person I sent it to (as long as it is in the states) when I am done so that person can add his/her info and include it when (s)he send it along.

I would prefer to just include it when I ship her. I did not see one in the case.

It is just going to have a brief history of its inception, the violin itself, who donated it, who donated the case, etc. and the first host. Then there will be a little history of where it has been to date. I am not going to talk about each host, etc. This is also not meant for any host information other than name and/or username, and whatever part of their location they want to share (ie in the States, maybe the state and town/village/city), the date received and date sent to next host, new host screen name and country sent to.

Thank you.

They call me, “Mellow Cello”

  Brazil in SA.

  Yes in Oz, but nothing (meaningful) was shared ( I THINK there were a couple of pics taken on her travel to Australia (a stop over in Germany) - but where she ended up in Oz I can't tell.

  OH - cid - check your PM inbox -do NOT ship The Traveller to me at this time - it's all clarified in the PM!

Hi CID.

Yes, the fiddle was in Australia.  From there it was sent to Brazil and then back here to the US.

At one time there was a thumb drive in the case that we were putting photos and/or videos on when we hosted, but I believe that got lost somewhere along the way.

I think a travel log in the case is a great idea. Thanks for doing that. I hope you’ve enjoyed your time hosting The Traveler!

Let the bow flow.
