@BillyG Just replied back.

@fiddle chick Thanks. I did not see a thumb drive. I think the idea was great, but I would not have placed it in my laptop, anyway. I usually use my iPad, too. Thumb drive would not have been able to be used. I read about the thumb drive when I was looking at the first posts to get info for my brief history of her and thought that it would not actually work, even though it was a great concept.

At least I found out not to insure it. It made a lot of sense when I read about whether to insure or not.

I might include shipping instructions in my little history document. Would that be a good idea?

@BillyG

Maybe I need a correction for the UK mention in my little biography of the Traveler.

I have UK, Scotland. Should I say England, Scotland? I want to het it right.

@cid -

Just use "Scotland, UK", it's the least problematic.

Should I say England, Scotland?

  Absolutely not - you would have a serious riot on your hands drummerdrummerdrummer - in 1814 when The White House was burnt to the ground by the Brits, legend has it that it was a Scottish soldier who lit the match (that is after finishing off the fine wines and whiskies)

  Thanks for checking !!!!!!

  I did leave a 2017 calendar in the case for hosts for that year to mark up - and had hoped that as years went by others would add a new calendar - but I doubt if anyone has bothered.....   Your little "history document" is probably better.

@BillyG

Sorry for the confusion, I was just using Scotland for Scotland. I thought there was a violin in England and it would be referred to it as UK. The “, Scotland” was referring to “, Scotland, Denmark, Brazil, etc”.

Was there a host in England? If not, the UK question is irrelevant. I was basically wondering, when I was thinking there was one in England, if it would be called UK or England. I am thinking a host living in England would not be called UK.

I am confused by what countries hosted her. What the heck is “Oz”? Did Dorothy, Todo, Tinman, Lion and Scarecrow host her? 😂

Does anyone have the countries she was in?

USA

Scotland

Denmark

Australia

Brazil

Canada (Am I wrong on this one?)

Someone said a stopover in Germany. Not sure what that means. Was she hosted in Germany?

Any other countries?

Thanks everyone.

LOL @cid - yup - I see....

The Traveller was hosted in Scotland, UK by me

Also in England, UK by Jim Dunleavy, Jim Dorans and Terry Taylor

"Oz" is Aussie lingo for their own country, Australia

No, it was never hosted in Germany as such - just travelled through the country - the reference to that was by Donald who was travelling from Denmark to Australia and took a picture at the border of Germany or something while "on his journey carrying The Traveller" - well - that's my best understanding.

I seriously recommend not copying my mistakes. D'oh - guntohead.JPG

Am I right with the Traveler having been Canada and that the Traveler was NOT in Belize? I can’t trust my map view. I don’t know why I am thinking Canada.

Yes, the Traveler has been in Canada. Thought so, but couldn't remember any details. Found proof in the comments under the Traveling Fiddle article:

-------

sunshineb says:
Well…. today was LOADS of fun!!!! July 1st is Canada Day up here in the great white north. So, I decided to take the traveller along with me to the community Canada Day celebrations and see what kind of trouble we could get ourselves into! My first thought was to just keep her fairly visible sticking out of my shoulder bag and see if I was approached by any passing inquisitive fiddlers. Not too many bites on that, although there were a few little girls that were tickled to try her out! So then I decided to be a bit more proactive and ventured backstage of the amphitheatre during the show. I introduced myself, explained a bit about the traveller and said I would be willing to share her with any fiddler brave enough to come up and do an impromptu show! Well, Penny took me up on the offer and it turned out to be a great time!!
I’ll post the video as soon as I can figure out how to link it to the page…. 😉

Hope that helps! -- Diane

I have the short little history of the inception of the Traveling Fiddlerman Community Violin written. A lot of people do not know how the idea was started because it is way at the beginning of this thread. I mentioned the creator, Vincent Knight, Scotty donated the Cremona SV-100 violin, and ftute donated the hard case.

It is just a short history for the current host. It includes all the countries she has visited since its conception to now. Any new countries will show up in the registry attached to the short histroy. I am going to get a very lightweight little pad to write the brief history in and have pages with the headings:

Host Name and/or Forum Username

State, Country

Date Rec

Date Sent

Country Sent to

It is just a little registry in case someone in the future wants to know where she has been. No personal information or comments will be made in the registry. It is like a hotel registry book. And, if they had trouble putting all the beginning posts together to get her story, a brief history of her conception.

The Country Sent To will fill in the blank as to where it went if the next host does not sign the registry. It will probably happen more than once, but it is better than no written record at all.

As a reminder, I have the following countries:

USA

Canada

Scotland

Denmark

Australia

Brazil

Not sure everyone will be interested in the little history and registry being included, but it won’t take up much room and will be very lightweight. We should be able to fit a lot of rows of registry on one page, so only 2 or 3 pages of registry would be needed. It is just for the information requested. Each host would be sharing info on the forum site for all to read, not in the registry.

At the beginning, there was a USB drive in the case that contained a list of who had the Traveler and where it had been. Each person who hosted edited the list. We also put docs with stories, comments, recordings and videos about her visit on it.

Anyone know if that still exists?

If it helps, I think I still have copies of what was on it as of the time that I had the traveler (September 2013). I'll check when I get home tonight.

I don’t think I am going to go into that much detail with the story. I am just mentioning who started it and when,  who donated the violin and case, the idea of it. The little history and register will be in the case or box the case is in. I don’t want to take up too much room or add any significant weight with a many paged document.

I didn’t notice the USB, but I will look again, but I don’t think I am going to insert it into my laptop. I used a thumb drive a friend gave me to get a design she made off from and, unbeknownst to her, that drive had an issue. I am leery about that sort of thing. Murphy’s law is a permanent resident in my life 😂.  It also may not even be using software to create the docs that my laptop can actually read. It could have been lost in packing at some point, I will check for it, though.

Just an FYI, the Traveler appears to be in good shape. I looked and did not see any cracks or other visible issues. I will try to take some closeup later today or tomorrow and get photos of all the areas with the names and post them. I don’t think that has been done.

Sorry to join this discussion after having been off for awhile. Just to confirm, the Traveler has been to Canada at least three times, twice with me in Alberta, and at least once somewhere in Saskatchewan, I think. She liked the snow, and enjoyed it again in Alaska!

I think she did a visit in Scotland, but also England. I had it in 2019 and 2017 I think. I do not recall seeing a jump drive in the box.

We could do homework and scroll back through this thread a ways, to determine the exact path she has taken. The big map still has my location in Kananaskis country on it, plus Brazil, I see: https://fiddlerman.com/traveling-fiddle/

I tell friends of mine about this and they are amazed at the distances she has travelled, and also the trust and coordination it takes from all of us to do it. It is an amazing story!

@cid I just scrolled back and heard all your music, including the Christmas carols with the Traveler. I love the line of violins and violas in your music room/study (not sure what room it is, but wish I had one like it). Your songs are lovely, very good videos and great sound, very nice. That Traveler has been making good music!

Thanks, @intrepidgirl. I am very critical if myself. I don’t take violin lessons at the moment. I took about 5 lessons about a year ago and then used the Essential Elements for Strings and their online resources. I am not out of 1st position and no vibrato. I am moving around in positions with my cello and working on cello vibrato. Both are so different in the way it feels in the arm that I can’t do it on violin until it is more natural in cello.

My husband made the wall rack. It is in my livingroom. I live in a ranch and it has one of those long narrowish livingrooms. Same as my kitchen/dining room (wider than livingroom). I love it. I do my playing at that end of the livingroom. We are the only two in the house, kids are married and off all over. I just turn the TV off and it is my music room. Sometimes I take them into the kitchen. Different sound.

I wasn’t sure about hanging anything on the wall because we just put wood laminate flooring down and painted the walls. It hurt to see those holes go into the paint job. Luckily, the rare thing happened, it was level. Even with rulers and levels, nothing gets hung level or straight 😂. It would be worse if I did the hanging.

The Traveler is holding a spot where my 15” viola would be on the rack, I put her into her case temporarily. The viola slots are just a little wider than the violin slots because the peg box end is wider. The tuning pegs are not holding them in place. There is a slot on the bottom of the spaces the instruments slide into. The little “hook” knob on the back of the neck is what sits into the slots. The arms of the slots keep them in place. The bottoms are also slightly angled towards the wall. You have to lift up and then pull forward to get them off the rack. They can’t just slip forward. I was surprised how much thought was put into that rack. He does not like working with wood. So, the Traveler is hanging very safely and in plain site in the first slot.

Hopefully, I can get the closeup photos I want to take taken today. It was dreary and not very good lighting yesterday. A flash would have a glare show up in the finish, so I would like to not have to use a flash if possible. My sewing room table has a nice flat maple flip up work space. I want to set her on that and then take the photos. It is the best spot to do it, just was a little dark to get the right lighting without a flash yesterday. This morning it is cloudy and icy rainy, but it might clear up this afternoon and get sunny. Depends on the track of the front going through. If I have to, before I ship her, I will use flash or get a lot of lights moved into that room to get photos. No info on where to send her right now, and there is ice, so I still have time. I will get all the signatures at least once in a photo. Depending of location of the signature and the overlapping, some may actually be in two photos.

...sorry I don't know if I'm doing that return messaging thing right.

But, sure thing, I'll go on the list.....if no one minds hearing me screeching away in Texas. Of course I'll have to get up the nerve to make a video (little terrified!)

Lol can't wait to hear and see you play.  Believe me, we all remember that phase of our learning very well!  I'll put you on the list.
