Ans.: rebec!

I was watching a DVD of Cadfael last night: -

and a minstrel was playing a rebec, so I thought I'd post a few links here.

It took me a while to get the joke.

Cute joke!

I really like the idea of the 'toddler' size, but wonder about how hard it is to hold with such a curved back and bottom edge.

My Ukulele has a curved back and I have a heck of a time trying to keep it from slipping/sliding around while I'm trying to play it!

Italian mandolins are still "bowl-backed" (I believe the correct expression is. Bowlback, bowl back, whatever).

They are good for resting on pot-bellies, lol!

I love the sound of that instrument. I tried looking for a lesson book online just now, but found none, so how would you learn to play it?.

Just got the joke, by the way. Very funny!

Alf, have you ever thought of getting one of these rebecs? Wonder where you would get replacement strings and bow or bow hairs? I really love the sound.

Oh, @Gordon Shumway , aka Alf, I forgot to mention, when I saw this tooic title, I thought Rainbow Connection was going to be played on it. What gives? That is Kermit's song! Then I got the joke.

I used to play Rainbow Connection on my piano, simple version, of course. It was the name of a 4-H group I lead for 2 meetings!

I'd forgotten about cadfael. Yes, I've often thought about getting a rebec, but the tonality is a moot point, and I think I'd be more likely to get a modern ethnic equivalent instrument than spend a lot of money on something that might be wrong on so many levels.
