I am a newbie, a neophyte, a rookie. I have read that it takes a lot of experimentation and trial and error to find a set-up that is right for me. I'm sure that eventually I will find the right combination of shoulder rest and chin rest that doesn't pinch, hurt, scrape, wear or otherwise do bodily harm to me, but what the heck do I do with all of these chinrests, shoulder rests, pads, etc. That I have tried and they just don't work? Right now I have two tailpieces, three or four chin rests, another three or four shoulder rests two kinds of chin rest pads and a smattering of tuning pegs, end pegs and sound posts. And another thing, what the heck am I saving old sound posts for? They are too short to toast marshmallows on.

How many times have you seen a new gimmick or a different way of doing something and thought, "Hey! I like that idea, but I'm not going to buy one just to see if it works". Wouldn't it be nice to have a friend that tried one of those things and doesn't like it and wants to pass it on to someone else so that they too can feel badly about wasting money on one or more of them. It is true that some, in fact many, of these things are available for $1 or $2, hardly more than the postage to get it to you, but the $50 Bon Musica shoulder rest is not, nor is the Gel Rest chin rest/pad. Both of these are available through Fiddlerman Shop, but others may may not be and I'm not 100% sure of how far the return policies go on merchandise purchased from the Fiddlerman Shop, although it does appear to be pretty much comprehensive. In any case, some items just may not be available for a "trial run" for whatever reasons. What I'm trying to get to without stepping on any toes is how do I let people (I can't be the only new kid on the block that is waiting for Godot) know that I have a box of stuff that they may want to try out and if they were to email or P.M. me I would be glad to send it to them to try. If they like it, make me an offer, if not just send it back or on to someone else to try. I'm not going to post my list of junk box contents quite yet. I'm just curious as to how people would take this, and I don't want to upset anyone.

@JiminTexas and others.  With people so friendly here, you are sure to find folks to share stuff with.  I have generally swapped in the form of care packages that start with a forum personal message.   To me, swapping is more fun than cash transactions.  I have learned much about strings by that method.

Another situation that works, often for lesson and music books, is to offer items on eBay and give a heads up in the forum’s “for sale” area.

If you don't find anyone to swap with, maybe you could donate your left overs to a local music school, they're always in need of chinrests/shoulderrests and what not.

Fiddlershop also donates instruments to Haiti(?). Correct me if I have the wrong place. Maybe they could use shoulder rests, chinrests, repair parts, strings, etc to include.  Check with Fiddlerman if you are interested in that route. I bet they would even do lesson books, but do not hold me to that. Just another suggestion.

I think the answer to your provocative post title involves a trusted friend and a vat of lye. But alas, you have body parts to get rid of.

Other than the Bon Musica(seems a bit sophisticated for my tastes), what shoulder rests have you got? I could use another. I'm also always in the market for chin rests that are flat/rounded with low smooth shelves, laterally biased, and a bit on the higher side.

If I remember correctly, I believe Fiddlerman uses WordPress for this site. I also use WordPress for my blog. I remember looking at a plugin for my WordPress blog that would allow members to list "classified ads". (I have decided to wait until my blog and forum grows some more before I install this plugin.) I am going to call it The Swap Shop. No money will be involved for the item, except for the cost of postage/shipping to the "buyer". I don't know if Fiddlerman would want to get into something like this, but it would be a great way from members to exchange unneeded/unused items that might be wanted by another member. https://wpadverts.com/

Or, if the Fiddlerman doesn't want to employ such a plugin, there could be a forum area where members can list unneeded/unused items and anyone who may want or be able to use such an item can PM the member, and they can work out the exchange privately.
