How many folks have played a song, (not from sheet) from long days gone by. Played it for at least 30 minutes then had to leave for a few and forgot what you were playing.
Happens to me all the time. Tonight while watching TV I was playing a song from memory, the title, ???????????? I can't remember. It was a song written and sung back in the 50's. I had to run to the store and thought, I should write down the title and add to my list,,,, nah, how can I forget this song, I got it down.
While I was driving to and from the store I was listening to a country station on "Serius" radio, four songs max. When I got back home I was gonna play that same song and for the life of me I couldn't and still can't remember the song's title as I'm writing this post.
Don't know how many times while playing I think to do it, but don't.

_________write it down______.
I find myself playing songs.. in my case I have sheet usually that I can defer back to, but I have a lot of sheet in binders. Also there are sometimes I bow something or try something new and I should also...
_________write it down______.
and sometimes I have goals and things I want to do/ play / practice and I forget by the time I am next to my violin... so I should also..
_________write it down______.
Cheers.

A while back I decided to write down what I wanted to work on for the week - to commit!! If I don't write the songs down I hear way too many and start working on those for a day or 2 until I hear some new one and then move on!! I am still collecting songs but am not working so out of focus.
At first I was using paper clips to book mark songs in my Fidler/s Fake Book. Ran out of paper clips!! No seriously there were so many and I was still jumping around way too much.

I just stuff down all the time. Have a little notebook I carry in a pocket, and it's not unusual for there to be a few notecards pinned up with thumbtacks by the computer.
I'm not so much forgetful as just a touch absentminded. My mind has been absent for years.

Hey, when I was about 18, I was sure I knew everything. It has all been downhill since then. LOL

I do the exact same thing. I have a notebook of a list of songs I play at my church, but if I don't write it down, I will forget what I practiced on. I'll practice about an hour before church, and by the time I get ready to play, I have no idea what I practiced on.
A lot of times, I don't know what I'm playing until I get up front and start playing. Makes for an interesting result sometimes.
