To me, finding the most natural playing position for Violin (AND Viola) was important when I started out, but maybe more so for Viola - just cause it's so unwieldy.

Violist Daphne Gerling: Finding a Natural Playing Position

Does a smaller Viola still feel more awkward than holding a Violin?  I think this quick tip works equally well for Violin, also.

My poor posture doesn't help... using a walker has really messed me up!

I think the main problem with finding a natural playing position is that there isn't one. I think it's an inherently unnatural position to hold your body in. You just have to get used to it.

🤔... probably should've mentioned I did find what felt natural for me - don't think I'd still be playing if I hadn't, especially since my instruments are heavier than most.

Must admit I've seen many violinists on YT/films/TV - that 'looked' very uncomfortable... obviously they 'got used to it'.

The Fiddlerman beginner video tutorial for holding the violin is great.  But, the OP video gives explanations for what can cause discomfort vs comfort.

I try to be an optimist & want to think there's always some way to play comfortably... even if unorthodox.

...of course, anything new is always awkward - but it shouldn't be torture.

I had been pretty ill right before I started learning to play the violin.  I didn't have any strength in my left arm to hold up my violin... so, I sat with my left elbow propped up with a pillow - until my arm got stonger!
