I didn't want to hijack OO's thread, but I have some recording questions also, so I started a new thread. What are yall's thoughts on ribbon mic vs condenser mic for recording acoustic violin? Distance from mic? Mic Placement? How to prevent the recorded sound from being thin or nasal?

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort. ~Herm Albright

I can only speak from experience. When in a recording studio, never has a technician ever used a condenser mic with any recordings that I have ever done. Ribbon mics seem to be the preferred product :-)
Mic placement depends on the space. Often the tech will listen in his booth and readjust from time to time. We need to be still when we play. They usually mount the mic a bit above us pointing down. If its one mic for one person it'll point towards the bridge so to speak but not that close to. I guess an average of 2 to 3 feet away from.....
I think having the best mic will prevent your recording from being thin/nasal. The best quality mic will pick up the closest to reality sound. ;-) Sometimes that is nasal :-(
