Thanks Kevin and Fiddlerman! Yes, that's what I thought too. I asked her instructor and she said that the 1/4 size is a good fit right now (almost too big), and that she would likely need that size for 1-2 years. I will measure her arm length when she gets home from school and post it so that I can get your opinion. As you can imagine, I would rather not have to buy a larger size in a few months if I invest in this now, so you make a good point.

I'm glad you guys said something. The 1/4 really does looks like the right size when she's holding it, but when I measured her arm she's just shy of 21" from palm to neck. So should I go with the 1/2 size then? Also, we are currently taking a break from all lessons (focusing on school for the moment), so I am thinking about it possibly being a Christmas present. Thanks!

its tough to invest in a non full size violin because they do grow so fast. My son is 10 and is in a half size violin. Next year he will jump to a full size cause we already own one. We had a nice school program through our V shop that gave us full credit on rental instruments towards a bigger better model. Of course ours were never damaged. So in a year I will have a half size for sale.
