OK @sus49 - glad it helped - I know, as a beginner, sometimes a "detailed explanation" that makes you stop to think ( like WHAT the heck is he rambling on about ) - can be more useful than a simple "Oh, man, it's easy - this is what you should do". Everyone's setup is different, etc etc etc - you and the fiddle are in a symbiotic relationship - each one depends on the other, to get the best out of each other you have to understand the simple physics of the "thing attached to you". LOL

I love your approach. Experimenting is a great way to find out for yourself what works and what doesn't. I approach string cleaning from the other direction - I wipe them off before I put the violin away. I will have to make note of how much is on there before I do that, and try different amounts of rosin.

Yes, sometimes it takes more than a quick few words to "explain" what's going on in a beginners head and the things they're battling with! LOL - absolutely !
