OK @sus49 - glad it helped - I know, as a beginner, sometimes a "detailed explanation" that makes you stop to think ( like WHAT the heck is he rambling on about ) - can be more useful than a simple "Oh, man, it's easy - this is what you should do".  Everyone's setup is different, etc etc etc - you and the fiddle are in a symbiotic relationship - each one depends on the other, to get the best out of each other you have to understand the simple physics of the "thing attached to you".  LOL

Good luck with the playing and rosining !

I seriously recommend not copying my mistakes. D'oh - guntohead.JPG

I love your approach. Experimenting is a great way to find out for yourself what works and what doesn't.  I approach string cleaning from the other direction - I wipe them off before I put the violin away. I will have to make note of how much is on there before I do that, and try different amounts of rosin.

@LindaMc - hi! I must have missed your original introduction to the forum - so WELCOME ABOARD fellow fiddler !

Yes, sometimes it takes more than a quick few words to "explain" what's going on in a beginners head and the things they're battling with!   LOL - absolutely !

In my opinion, rosin the bow when you feel that the bow is no longer gripping the strings. When it glides over the strings without producing as much sound as it usually does. This differs from person to person and also depends very much on how often and long you play.

Does anyone have any new ideas. It's about time to change the poll. :)

I haven't been here long enough to know what polls there have been already, but I'll throw out a couple ideas:

Worst damage done to your violin (by yourself or someone else):
chip
crack
broken neck or scroll
varnish damage (scratch or string cleaning accident)
complete and utter annihilation

With all these lost/forgotten and stolen violin stories making the rounds, one for along those lines.

How old were you when you started playing (this might be good for first time visitors looking to learn the violin/fiddle to click on to see the results.... if it hasn't been done already, that is, and one of the choices could be "Haven't started yet/want to learn")

How many bows/fiddles do you own

How many instruments do you play

How often do you change strings

Preferred string type (or brand?)

Favorite time of day to practice

Favorite location to practice
(home, park, patio, jam sessions....)
