What does flat wound mean?

When wire is wraped around a string, on sone strings you can see and feel the wire.  On flat wound the surface is just thatm flat. Instead of a round wire a flat ribbon is used.

I know about those strings Kevin but do you know where they come from and who makes them? I heard some rumors and complaints about them. I should test a set.

In response to the recent shoutbox converstation, here are some Poll topic ideas:

What continent are you from? Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, South America

Do you sing while you play a song? Always, sometimes, never, just in my head

Do you play violin with others? Usually, often, sometimes, never

How do you usually store your violin? In a case, hung on the wall, on a stand, lying on a flat surface

Have you taken violin lessons? I am taking lessons now, I used to take lessons, I plan to take lessons in the future, I do not plan to take lessons

How old is your violin? Less than 10 years, 10 to 50 years, 50 to 100 years, over 100 years, I don't know

What do you usually visit first on Fiddlerman.com? Tutorials, forum posts, shoutbox, sheet music

you have just secured your position as secretary during the meetings. LOL

Good job taking the minutes of the meeting!

I really liked many of those topics. My choices in favorite order are as follows for the following weeks topics:

1- How old is your violin...

2- Have you taken lessons...

3- How do you store...

4- What do you visit first...

5- Have you taken lessons...

6- What continent...

7- Do you play with...

Dang it! I always get nominated for this stuff when I am not looking!

Actually, I was home from work today to care for sick family and needed something to keep my mind off the mountain of work and looming deadline waiting when I get back!

I could probably come up with more, but I want the rest of you to have a chance too!

Hey everyone,

A reminder that I need good ideas for new polls. All questions must be coupled with answers to choose from.

Here are the polls that we have had previously. For more details on any of the past polls please press on the polls archive link.

  • How long have you been playing the violin?
  • What type of string to you prefer?
  • Do you sing while you play the violin?
  • What do you usually visit first on Fiddlerman.com?
  • How do you usually store your violin?
  • Which continent do you reside in?
  • How old is your violin?
  • How do you usually store your violin?
  • Which continent do you reside in?
  • Do you read music, play by ear only, or a little of both?
  • What kind of E string does your tailpiece accept?
  • What kind of strings do you use?
  • Do you like viola jokes?
  • How often do you play scales?
  • DO YOU USE A SHOULDER REST?
  • How often do you change your strings?
  • Which, if any, was your favorite violin movie?
  • How often do you practice?
  • What is your favorite music style for the violin?

Also, we can rerun any of these polls again with great ease since some of them were only run for a short while and when the site had much fewer daily visits. We are now around 1500 unique visits per day. thumbs-up

There have been a lot of voter's on this last one, "How long have you been playing" and that Idea was conceived in the Shout Box in just a matter of minute's.

I don't see the new "String" poll up there yet, but then again, my computer is 4 years old and may take time to catch up.   rofl

"Do you take lessons or did you in the past ?  (Include public school as "lessons")"

Answers:

I take lessons.

I did take lessons in the past but not now.

I took lessons before and now am back to lessons after a long layoff.

I plan to take lessons.

When you come to a fork in the road, take it.

How many times a day do you both love and hate yor fiddle at the same time?

Are these feelings proportional to the amount if time you practice?

Do you work harder? Or think "bugger it, where's the chatbox"?

I am amazed at how old people of my age are.....

I like this one, BUT, wouldn't everyone say A5?

you think there's any liars here? No... never... I'd have to select option A4 myself.

I think if I progress and continue on, I would be able to justify spending those kind of dollars right now but not more... unless I was a pro and used it to make some income to live on, more is not in my option list.
