Hi,

I was thinking about recording a video and was wondering if you need a microphone or anything special to make sure the sound is recorded correctly, or is the built in stuff on phone/camera enough?

That is a great question and I'm sure there are many wondering the same thing Anny.

To get a better video with a higher quality sound you would want to upgrade the mic as much as you feel is necessary or can afford. There are relatively cheap alternatives that give great results but the overall listeners experience will also depend on their equipment to listen. Many times, recording hi fidelity is lost on the listener because of small computers and devices with very small speakers.

You can make quite impressive videos just using your smart phone as well. Of course the quality differs enormously depending on what device you have.

Have you seen those new commercials at the movies with cool video shot using the iPhone 6?

A microphone holds much improvement over the standard iPhone audio recorder.

I've invested in a tascam dr-22 audio recorder and so I can record I stereo with a 96k sampling rate (not sure of the significance other than the fact that the hardware has those capabilities and that iphone recording does not come close to rivaling the audio quality).

Here is is videos to compare the sound quality...

iPhone 5C recording audio and video:

&

iPhone5c recording video w/ tascam dr-22 recording audio (audacity reverb and openshot audio/video synchronizing):

I think that the video quality of the iPhone is not terrible enough to demand a change; however the audio is terrible on the iPhone. Also the iPhone appears to be super finicky when it comes to video lighting.

Thank you Fiddlerman & Jacques

So, according to what I found online and what you two guys said, I'll most definitely need a mic. + the built in mic on both the camera and the phone (not a smartphone) didn't pick it up well at all when I messed around with them last night. My violin sounds even more like a harmonica than in real live.

No, I haven't. Actually I haven't even gone to the movies since moving here to the US 10 years ago.surprised

Yes, I can hear a lot of difference, in the first one it sound kind of muffled and I can hear a lot of wind. The second one sounds more like your in a building with some acoustic qualities.

It's quite amazing how many other things I'm getting into here, just because I finally wanted to pick up violin!smile

If you intend on recording from or close to a computer you may consider a webcam with a built in mic such as THIS ONE.

I don't know how good the sound is but some musicians use these types of cameras to record youtube videos or play online on sites such as streetjelly.com, etc. That particular camera has good reviews. If you want something more portable you'll have to spend a little more money. Of course the option of buying a portable mic is fine but you'll need to edit the movie unless you can connect it to your recording device.
