💖 that Harryhausen inspired so many film makers, like Tim Burton, Spielburg & Guillermo del Toro!
"Fiend Without a Face" was such a low budget British film I'm sure they just couldn't afford Harryhausen. 😄 All the stop motion for this film was done in Munich by K.L. Ruppel.
Besides monsters, back to the 'Creepy Doll' - another fascination of the macabre... Creepy Puppets, and then Killer Toy Characters in film! Automata & Karakuri have also historically been creepy, cause you wind them up & they 'come to life'.
Just for FUN (check out the music) "The Haunted House" (1921) - Buster Keaton!
Everyone enjoys magic - film Special FX is a form of magic (fooling the eye)! I'm a big fan of the earliest films that used Special FX , especially after 'stop trick' techniques started to be used, accidentally discovered by Georges Méliès - near the end of the 19th Century.
...probably explains some of my music choices. 😁

Anyone in the UK getting in the mood for Samhain festivities?
How about similar festivities elsewhere, like Día de los Muertos?
...been doing my best to squeeze in listening time (while doing other things at the same time) of interesting history.

Wow, I've hit the Halloween Jack Pot! 🤗
...idk, I must live under a rock, because I've never heard of Aurelio Voltaire!
This Mr. 'does-it-all' has my ATTENTION!
He has a 'dark goth/cabaret' band, including several violinists & a cellist - released an impressive list of albums (and also an impressive list of books), teaches 'stop motion' animation, and so much more...!
PLUS, he hosts his Gothic Homemaking YT Channel!
How cool to see a glimpse of of last February's "TransWorld's Halloween & Attractions Show" (2023)... NO, it's NOT about gender identity! It's an expo for businesses who deal in haunting attractions, Halloween props & costume sales (not open to the general public)!
What's really scary?
I've never heard so many clichés... with no profanity! 😳
...kinda refreshing.

I had read long ago that the precursor of the Jack O' Lantern was a carved out turnip, but I could never picture a turnip large enough to bother with... but a rutabaga, now THEY get big! This is the time of year I start thinking of cooking with rutabagas.
Catriona McPherson, multi-award winning thriller author, shares her Memories of Scottish Halloween (rutabaga lanterns)!
🤔... 'guising', 'dooking' for apples & 'monkey' nuts - hanging scones "drenched in treacle", tangerine peel spell... and the stench of a candle burning in a rutabaga!

Oh Boy, Kevin has e.s.p. - just handed me a mini Mounds & since I have absolutely no willpower... I ATE IT (so much for my diet)! 🎃
I have a hard time resisting chocolate - Reese's especially!
A lot of different candy out this year - options of the old name brands even like Snickers!
If anyone isn't familiar with Christine McConnell (The Curious Creations of Christine McConnell), she is amazing!
Christine had a short series on Netflix a few years ago - some great Halloween candy, cake & critter making! She's made the most fabulous gingerbread house you could ever imagine (modeled from a real house) & done some other very cool projects.
I had bought her book - my oldest Granddaughter loves looking at it & getting ideas (loves cooking - she's 11).

I don't think I could've gotten enough of listening to Robert Burns if I'd lived while he was penning his longer poetry & lyrics - fine stories!
"Tam O' Shanter" - a haunting, cautionary tale by Burns, read by Karen Dunbar.
Oh, Tom's poor mare!
"Halloween" - Chris Peterson does a bit of English translation for this Burns poem to make this a little easier to understand this particular Halloween experience.

Wanted to mention some interesting info I ran across while going thru some papers & books. There was an article from a 2017 local paper, about a little town North of us that caught my eye... "Pumpkins & Bagpipes" by David Gillis - he explain that Bagpipes where once a tradition at Halloween in Algonac (Michigan)!
A few highlights:
The little town really got into decorating & started preparing a scrap wood pile in September. The pile was also tree clippings and burnable trash from Autumn clean-up - grew to a HUGE pile by Halloween. The bonfire was the main Halloween event [sounds more like Samhain]. A parade would form around dusk with Kids & floats, along with the High School marching band (dressed for Halloween). They marched thru town , ending up at the bonfire site. Candy, beverages & hotdogs were provided by the Rotary & Lions Clubs & prizes were awarded for best costumes.
David's Maternal Grandfather (from Spain) donned his kilt & played his Bagpipes every year. He told David that Bagpipes were an ancient tradition, played all over Spain - told him about the Celtic migration into Northern Spain [Galicia?].
Kids actually went 'begging' the night before Halloween and pleaded "help the poor?"!
Trick-or-Treating
The Merriam Webster Dictionary says this coined phrase showed up in Canada, then down into Michigan in the 1920's!
From Wikipedia:
Behavior similar to trick-or-treating was more commonly associated with Thanksgiving from 1870 (shortly after that holiday's formalization) until the 1930s. In New York City, a Thanksgiving ritual known as 'Ragamuffin Day' involved children dressing up as beggars and asking for treats, which later evolved into dressing up in more diverse costumes. Increasing hostility toward the practice in the 1930s eventually led to the begging aspects being dropped, and by the 1950s, the tradition as a whole had ceased.
Seems the cartoon strip "Peanuts" & Walt Disney are responsible for the spread of the 'Trick-or-Treat' concept & phrase across the US!
This short film was originally released from Disney in 1952 (Wikipedia) - "Trick or Treat" (1956). EVERYONE saw it!
