If a genie came out of a bottle and told me I would awake tomorrow as one of the worlds best musicians, I would have morphed into this guy. (givem 2 minutes)

Clap clap clap.  Awesome playing.

Opportunity is often missed because it wears suspenders and looks like hard work.

LOL Ken :)

Thanks.

Great guitarists to both of you. I never gave it much thought but those guys have full control.

This guy used to be one of my idols but over the years I've had so many that it's not fair to list them.

Unfortunately his drinking caught up to him in the end. He had a reputation for drinking so much that no one thought that he would be able to perform and then performing like a god.

Of course everyone knows by know my idol is Hilary Hahn.  I can never get enough of her.

This is a performance from her that I watch quite often.  I listen to Hilary every day many times.

Pierre is definitely my favorite violin instructor.

That's OK.

Maybe some people are simply off the chart like Hillary.

I can't tell where FM fits being that his major works on this site are only a few bars long.  We need (and deserve) a showcase piece.  Requests anyone?

(Schindlers List is OK but it's mostly schtik.)

I don't know, his Rockin' Beethovens's Fifth is pretty good and complete-- he plays all four violin parts, plays on different violins, and dances as well. Plus he put the video together. That's a whole lot of talent. And don't forget the video of a young FM playing Bach.

Hmm. I don't think I have "idols" for music.  Not in the sense of like someone I wish I was.   I'll settle for being me.  LOL

But there are many musicians that I consider great and where I feel they set good examples one way or another that I try to follow (at least sometimes..LOL).   I think of them more as "heroes" and "heroines", though.  They are many, and I'm always adding to the list as I find artists to like and find out about their lives and views and find more reasons to respect them.

A "schtick" is any performance that is exaggerated for emotional effect but that can be serious or just comedy.   (See Milton Berle on YouTube for comedy or any of my wife's soap operas for dramatic effects.)

Panzion   Will check the 5th.  The "young" version doesn't count.

Kogan    wonderful touch

@Oliver:  LOL  C'mon, Oliver, you know Pierre has some pieces up on youtube that are considerably more than "a few bars long".. Like these, for just a couple examples..

But I would agree that maybe they could do with being prominently linked on the main site here.  So new folks don't have to ask "Who is this guy?" or "Is he actually any good?"

You know Pierre isn't much on blowing his own horn, though.

Was not sure about that

Just "enquiring minds" at work !

Besides, you should be used to being a You Tube and Interrnet celebrity by now and the subject of some friendly gossip or publicity.  This is part of what fame is all about and autographs too, and yachts.

And this one is certainly more than a few bars long, as well:

I can't see where Pierre's Schindler's List performance is schtick, at all. Sure, maybe he did the video as a promo for his site, but it's a very well done performance nonetheless.

Other than Pierre, my musical idols would be...

Fiddle: Natalie MacMaster. It's because of a tune that she recorded -- Eternal Friendship -- that I took up the fiddle.

Mandolin: Chris Thile.

Guitar: Andy McGee.

And music in general: John Denver.

When the work's all done and the sun's settin' low,

I pull out my fiddle and I rosin up the bow.

Yes!  McMaster is almost a genre all by herself and great technician.  Good choice.

Rocky Mountain High ..... good at the time but very forgettable.  I saw him live.  Good entertainer but ................

McGee would not load for me.

"schtick" is as much the composition and the performer and it may take a good performer to pull it off.

KS  I hope you do not take me too seriously.  There is but one musician who is obviously light years ahead of everybody else.  It's not about idols, it's more humbleness.   Did you see her before?  (Maybe she is an alien?)
