I'm contemplating 3D printing a wall mount to store my viola but was wondering if it is better to always put it in the case between practice sessions or hang it and the bow from a wall mount, and if wall mount, is it okay to hang by peg(s).

I have a long wall rack my husband made that I hang my instruments on, by the peg end. I have one of those screw in hooks, like a cup hook, screwed in between each instrument to hand my bows. It is screwed in so the open ilene is facing up to the ceiling. I just grab and play.

@Mouse - Looks like you have a talented husband! Thanks for your input.

@ABitRusty - Good information and the humidity discussion link was very informative, Thanks.

@JohnG and others.  I am of the thought that having the instrument visible and available affords more opportunities for use, and therefore it is good to keep it hanging.  A wood bow should have hair tension lessened when not in use.  It is typically done with all bows, but likely more from tradition than from physics.

@Irv - That's a major reason I am leaning that way, too!

More playing time is what happened with me @JohnG. After I hung them, I was pulling one down at least 3 times a day, for just enough time to run some scales or little tunes I memorized, in addition to my serious playing time sessions, not always the same instrument is taken off the rack.

Also, have the shoulder rest easily available, too. I have found that that also increased playing time because between chores, I grab and instrument, a bow and shoulder rest and stand there playing for a while, if I don’t have time for a serious session. It increased my number of serious session times a week, too.

I always keep my viola in the case to prevent accidental damage. The risk is too high with a cat, and for that matter I don't really trust myself not to have accidents.

No pets here and there is a piano under it, so nobody ever walks close to them. 99.99% of the time, there is only my husband and I the house, also. When I was taking them out of the case and putting them back, I did not play them much.

What I am seeing, is that it really depends on each person's circumstancea and what makes sense to each.

I keep mine in stands, in the corner (out of the way, & out of direct sunlight).

Having the instrument close and easily accessible is a great idea for more frequent playing. Maybe you can mount them where the cats would not be able to reach.

I love having my violin ready to grab at a spur of the moment.

I call that, "Grab-n-Play" 😃 I have shoulder rests right below my instruments and bows.

The "pièce de résistance"!

Nice job, John - I'm impressed!

Beautiful location for your Viola.

🤔 a little gold or silver patina on that beautiful Viola-holder... (sorry 😁)

OMG!

Are those Russian Lomonosov, Fairytale plates I see?

Used to run across them once in a while, when I'd be out "treasure hunting".

Excellent!

Next?

@JohnG Just wondering, will that glass door open into your viola? It looks like it will in the photo.
