@ABitRusty -

Sorry, missed your post - I've been on quite the lengthy posting rant in this thread the past few days!

You make EXCELLENT points!  Thank you!

Most of this stuff I've been covering is just to get a better general understanding - I don't want to jump into buying anything.  ...may consider a synth pedal.

I do have a soft spot for synthesized music, but will probably go with just software.  I like the idea of making my violin sound like a synth, but also like acoustic violin playing along with synth music created in the background.

There's always cool new stuff!

Has Native Instruments gotten a little friendlier?   I thought it was expensive to use their stuff, but guess it's only with the full Kontakt 8 - I see there is some FREE use with the FREE Kontakt 8 Player!

With THRILL - love the morphing pad, compose with a whole orchestra just by moving a finger around in shapes!!!

Yeah, I know... played a lot with Mortimer, but once I got the 6-string it was like building a relationship... takes time when you don't want to screw it up!  🤣🥰

...plus, stuff's been kinda rocky in the real World.

since i use presonus.. to convert my violin to a midi instrument all i do is record me playing and open melodyne and boom!   theres the notes ready to use.  from those i can assign any instrument i want... or effect. if i want i can record real rtime with those effects active just like an electric.  the only reason i see to use an electric vs acoustic for this purpose is stage feedback possibly performing live or someone just doesnt want to work that method..

Wait a minute.

How do you play live like an electric violin?

I guess I'm still more interested in what I can play live, but still have to consider all my options if I want to create backing.

Okay, I understand what you are saying about recording a track & using Melodyne to convert to MIDI & then put effects/even change instruments.

To me there's still a difference in 'playing' a MIDI instrument, or effects with EV.  I just like when what I play sounds different than it should, while I'm physically playing it.

It was a little weird with the Choon Maker - like I was improvising... the drum pattern first, then while that was playing I added some melody & bass.  I felt I was playing an instrument, but I still had a little fun exploring the MIDI instruments in Michael Eskin's ABC Tools, afterwards.

Does make me realize I could have more fun with my 'Akai MPK Mini Play' if I saved what I've been playing in Studio One.

AND, with the idea of the 'morphing pad', I might even find I like creating with some of the Native instrument stuff I shared... more than making random weird sounds with a synthesizer.

...idk, I really need to be able to move around better so I feel like setting things up somewhere other than my bed, before I do anything more.  Finally losing weight & hope it helps with some of my pain issues.  I just can't make things happen fast enough! 😕

Man, bummed out that Ozzy Osborne pasted away this morning... geez, creepy he just did his farewell concert a short time ago.

So, I still can't do too much at the moment, but I am still learning tunes & I've been back playing every day for the past 4 months.  Before that, I was missing some days (more days than I'm comfortable with), but that only went on for a few months.

Really want to try out my new 'Spark 2' amp, but it's a little big to have next to me on the bed!  The diet I'm using now - works, so soon I hope to be able to do more.

Went down a crazy rabbit hole today!

I can't remember WHY I looked at this little tune on The Session - The Young Black Cow, which also led me to the Errigal McCreigh!  They are similar enough for me to consider just variants.  Both in 3/4 time, but it's mentioned 'Errigal' is an Air (not a waltz)... neither feel like a waltz to me.  Liked the little twist of a couple odd accidentals, too!

Anyway, it's been getting under my skin for a while now - tunes that should not be thought of as different.  SO, I innocently started out with the intent of just putting the 2 tunes together, in the same key (figured I might play with changing keys later) - but wanted to do it using Michael Eskin's ABC Tools.

Geez, this rabbit hole ran pretty deep, but I must say I ENJOY EDITING/ARRANGING THIS WAY!  ...didn't even notice the passing of time so I could've ended up in another dimension!  Sorry, only fooled around with melody & there's a LOT probably needs to be corrected - I ended up changing so much, just calling it 'Emily's Young MAD Cow'! 😵‍💫

...AND, it's NOT a Waltz!

Going to include the ABC's - just in case anyone want's to do their own doctoring, or alchemy (voodoo?).  Copy/paste to https://michaeleskin.com/abcto.....tools.html

You can listen to it, edit it, set whatever tempo/swing/reverb/midi instrument you want!  Have a ball! 🥳 ...I'm done for the night!

Geez, this is ADDICTIVE!

First, I added string ensemble, which sounded good (not showing it), but THEN... tried 'injected' bagpipes!  SO COOL (to me anyway)!

Not sure how both would sound played together, but I'm interested - I don't have ALL of the first version memorized on the fiddle, yet.

I have to say, THIS has given me some great ideas for how I could sound more like a piper on the FIDDLE!

(*edited) Not sure if it's the same with all the other 'injected' instruments (offered in 'More Tools'), but I haven't been able to re-introduce these 'new' ABC's back into the Tools app - original ABC's must be used (previous post) & manually set with the bagpipes 'injected' again.

It's obviously changed the NOTES AND ABC's DRAMATICALLY!

..  I CAN do that and use melodyne that way like i said.   But you really have to use the equipment a little bit to see what it can really do.  Ive explained b4 but i know its difficult to follow the way i explain it.  I play the violin... sound enters a mic and gets converted to an electrical signal.   that signal is picked up at the input of an audio interface.   The audio interface converts that signal to digital and puts it over in a holding area for the computer.  since presonus is running it can acces that and takes the signal and assigns it to a track.. that track can have effects ..like ANY effect you use in an amp.  i can asaign that effect to be applied before it prints on the track or after.  either way from that track it can be routed different places and one of those places can be my headphones or even speakers.  so i can play live, hear the effects applied to the violin in real time.

what i was saying that maybe was confusing is that i can also use those notes months later in melodyne after i have played live and send them to a piano instrument... or a guitar... or a xylephone.. or tuba...whatever.  thats because it was recorded and saved.  i can gear them real time... or i can hear them later.

its not important to me either way in what method anyone chooses.. i just want to make sure the capability is understood in case someone reads my explanation from b4.   seems like i explained it poorly.  maybe did again. idk

@ABitRusty -

Peakfiddler did a video about it (post#337), but using Reaper.

I got the impression headphones had to be used, so thought it was only for recording.

Thanks for explaining it better!

Pertaining to edited Post #348... just found out - once I 'inject' bagpipe qualities into a tune in ABC Tools, I can't re-introduce those ABC's back into the app.  This may apply to not only other instrument qualities 'injected', but possibly other tools.

Word of caution - save an original ABC's before experimenting.  There is a 'snapshot' & 'restore' feature in Michael Eskin's ABC Tools, but I haven't used it.  I wasn't able to 'restore' back to my original ABC's, because I hadn't used the 'snaphot feature - but I had downloaded the original ABC file.

correct!!  dancing heaphones do not need to be used!!  thumbs-up.   i as well as he probably use them because of volume of wood violin vs the daw signal.  there are also feedback issues if playing live with the signal going to an amp speaker..and this is the reason for an electric vs a wood...NOT because of the things you can do with either.   you can do everything you can do with an electric on wood... the electric uses a pickup..the wood can have a pickup OR mic..   being electric isnt a requirement to do the effects things.   its just easier from a feedback and volume level perspective.

i dont think slow.  you just havent tried both methods so didnt know or assuming.  part of why i bring up because if someone is new and wanting a violin they may be basing which type to purchase off of wanting to use with effects, which both can do.  granted if wanting the extra range of 7 strings and always playing live then maybe electric better.   if wanting to play in an string ensemble and play around with effects inside a computer the acoustic wouuld probably work better and no need for both, unless wanted. 🙂

@ABitRusty -

I'm grateful you step in!

Realized new folks stopping in don't always ask questions, maybe not know what to ask & here I'm trying to learn so many different things I miss stuff... sometimes I catch things when I go back over threads.

Anyway, I like the option of using a DAW - at least for my acoustic Viola... more so for folks with nice quality wood instruments, I'm sure.

I'm not ready to get a good mic, yet - but the Native Instrument stuff does have me drooling a bit.

From what I understand, I'd be able to use Kontakt in my Studio One to run the Native Instrument VST's, but I'm sure I'll be more than happy with some of the great FREE ones (if compatible) available now, when I get into it!

I was looking at this video from earlier this year - Leo Brennauer showing 35 FREE VST Instruments (That Shouldn't Be Free)!

...just keeps getting better & better!

Decided I better go over the 'laws' of notating with ties & beams, so I can clean up

'Emily's Young MAD Cow'

Wasn't quite sure about 3/4 time - found solace at these 2 sites:

Beaming in music: A Beginner’s Guide

Crossing the Line - "When is the Right Time to Use Tied Notes vs. Whole Notes in Music?"

I like Emin, but it was pitched a little high for my liking, so transposed down to Amin - can still go down to Gmin & be playable on 4-string Violins.  Cleaned up some beams, added strings MIDI sound, a little swing - and reduced the tempo by 10%.

Really would've liked to add some breathing room, but I'll have to rethink parts... probably just need to start throwing out some notes so I can at least have a partial rest at the end of phrases.  Thought about removing all the repeats... may try it (think I originally had a reason NOT to, but can't remember what that is). 🥴

@elcbk likin your compositions!  very cool what youre doing with the ABC tools.   i have not dived into those but think i should.  it seems like notion software may be more complicated than needed for the types of tunes i play.  and being able to share easily online is a big plus...talking about ABC.

I'm glad he was able to do that last concert--too many songs from my youth.  I think the first ones I thought of when I heard he passed were Crazy Train and Iron Man.

Really want to try out my new 'Spark 2' amp, but it's a little big to have next to me on the bed!  The diet I'm using now - works, so soon I hope to be able to do more.

Yay! Glad to hear diet is working for you thumbs-up

...Anyway, it's been getting under my skin for a while now - tunes that should not be thought of as different.

Compositions sounding good! I really like the bagpipe version.  That ABC tool looks really useful.

Characterize people by their actions and you will never be fooled by their words.

@SharonC -

I KNOW!  I even have one Ozzy's cd's for Kid's!  He made it with Jack.  Like the series he did with Jack, they just visited different sites & always something interesting.  What a VOICE... right to the end!

Haven't had ANY cravings with this diet! dancing

The bagpipes were a BIG surprise! 😄

@ABitRusty -

Thank you!

I know the ABC Tools can do more... just haven't made myself learn it, yet.

...but I'm starting to think this ALL may not be such a good thing - it's a little too easy to get hooked (for me, obsessed)!  Swore I wasn't going to touch it again, then figured if I want this to be an 'Air'... why not go a little crazy?

Seriously, I have to put this away!

...first, I better play it enough to memorize it. 🫤
