Mouse's Cubby Hole Part 2
Gordon Bennett
Adventures of an ambitious late-starter …

I have decided to start a new Cubby Hole. The original is taking a long time, at least for me, to open. It is weird, Might be because the topic is so long, so I am starting a second cubby hole. I might end out with a condo!
Here is a ink to the original, if you want to see the posts you may not have read, but please reply here, because the other gets hung up when opening.

Ok, I have the sheet music for this and was going to play it slowly, but I could not get the rhythm correct in spots, this darned dotted notes! So, I googled to look for it. WOW! this is fast.
Although this gist places it amazingly fast, and full of embellishments, I did get the gist of it, except for a couple spots.
Enjoy Pierre's Right Arm, performed by Micheal Burnyeat
Pierre's Right Arm performed by Michael Burnyeat
Here is another version of Pierre's Right Arm performed with 2 violins, a viola and cello. It is the same person doing all four. I think she calls herself Allstrings, at least thatbis what the YouTube showed.
Pierre's Right Arm performed by Allstrings (maybe )
Okay, this is the last version, I swear! This is Pierre Schryer and Dermot Byrne performing Sourgrass and Granite and Pierre's Right Arm, Pay attention at the end. The violin is really cool.

This is written by Brian Pickle.
If you liked Pierre Schryer's fiddle playing in the last link for Pierre's Right Arm, her is a link to a performance I posted in the Great Performance forum room

Brian Pickell - French Canadian Fiddle Tunes Thread (posts #43-45).
Pierre Schryer & Brian Pickell were band mates. I shared Pierre's tutorial for the tune you like in post #43 - check it out (slow the video down).

The tutorial is too fast and not a simple version, too many embellishments. Great for those who can actually play well, and just want to lear a tune, not really still at the learn to play the instrument level. It is a neat view of the left hand finger work, though. Thanks for pointing it out.

I found this video in an old old post and wanted to keep it here, also, for reference. I have the sheet music to this and have been trying it. It is lovely and and it has a great shot of the fingering used.
Si Bheag Si Mhor Reference Video
It is a really good video to use to learn this lovely piece.

I received a copy of Raglan Road yesterday, it is the piece Fiddlerman plays in one of his tutorials for beginners, but he plays a "drone" note or something. The sheet music also had those nites, so I have a clean copy of just the melody. I had trouble in spots trying to decide which was the melody note and which was not. I am so bad at deciphering music.
I also downloaded a better the copy of Si Bheag Si Mhor.
These tunes have a lot to offer for learning. One is great for long bow strokes, a big issue for me. It is also great for dynamics.
The second one is a little more involved, it necessarily faster, although I do hear versions of lot faster, but there are a lot more string crossings, more notes and a little more E string.
So, I am set for now. I am also doing Fiddlerman's single string exercises. These are great.

Yesterday, I worked on Ragland Road yesterday. I am gling to break it down soon. I want to get used to playing it from beginning to end, first.
I know most say to break it down, first, or very soon. If I do that, I will treat each section as a separate song, because that is was in imprinted in my mind. I have to have it in my mind at as one song, so I will break it down, soon. I had such an issue with that when taking lessons.
I alsl worked on Si Bheag Si Mhor ysterday. Completely different mindset and bowing than Ragland Road, but they work well together for lessons. All first position, etc. It also gives me a little variety.

I am continuing to work on Ragland Road and Si Bheag Si Mhor.
Here is an audio of Raglan Road I did this morning. It is the same audio I posted in the Share an Audio.
Raglan Road sounds simple. For most, probably is, but it is great for me. I need these slower, "simpler" pieces to work on my intonation, bowing, dynamics and string crossing. This is great for that. The bonus is that I absolutely love this.
I could not get a recording of Si Bheag Si Mhor. I messed up every time I turned Audacity on. I had to just practice and not record it. I love this, it has the same teaching ability as Ragland Road, except it is at a slightly faster pace, not fast, just slightly faster. It also has a completely different rhythm.
At the end, I played my old stand-bys. What I noticed was that some were sounding better, at least today.

Well, I did my cello, for maybe 20 minutes. My upper arm and fingers needed to rest, so I stopped.
I decided to start back with Suzuki Book 2, to get back into it. I will be working on the May Song. That song has a lot of string crossing. Uses the G, D and A strings. I do not think, the C string is used, if I remember correctly.
I also exercised my fingers with open strings up to the fifth note, required a shift to the fifth note, I like that shift. ie Open A to the E. I did that on each string, open D to A, etc. Surprisingly, with this exercise, the C string was actually fairly strong. When I need it in a song, I have issues with the C string. But, then this was specific to C and not going to C from another string.

I posted this in my first cubby hole, but since it tales a while for that to load, I have copied it and pasted it here so I can see if anything changes.
FIDDLERMAN BOWS THOUGHT (PRO AND PERFORMANCE SERIES)
Well, I purchased two new Fiddlerman bows. The sound I was getting from any of my violins was sounding pretty crappy to me. I know the sound was much better before. Everything, no matter which bow, or rosin, the sound was just not right. The bowing was also becoming kind of tough, for lack of a better word. I am not really good, but it has degraded. The bows were, also, not feeling as comfortable in my hands. The bows are good, but I am holding my violin differently and know I am bowing differently. So, rather than restring, like a lot of you do, I just replace the bows. I will donate the other bows to a school in the area with an orchestra.
The bows I purchased were the Fiddlerman Performance Series and the Fiddlerman Pro Series. I couldn't decide. I have more than 1 violin. They have different sounds and feel, so my husband said to get them both.
Anyway, first impressions, in general. I am not hearing scratch, and the bowing is much easier to do. Now, this could change as the newness wears off, but I don't think it will. They both just feel better when I am bowing.
There IS a difference between the bows. I only used them on my Fiddlerman Lord Wilton. The Pro seems warmer than the Performance, but I really like them both on this violin. They are both bowing really nice. I am not hearing scratch sounds at all. I was thinking there was something wrong with the violin, but that scratch was on the other violins, too.
They both have a really great feel. I can tell the difference. I really liked the other bows, FM Hybrid and Carbon Weave. I think with my using the violin more, and set up change, etc, I just needed something else. Whomever I donate the others to will be getting very nice bows! I have just changed the way I play.
These just feel so comfortable in my hands. Probably has to do with the balance.
The least thing I ever think or concern myself about is the look. I absolutely LOVE the look of these. They are not shiny. They are, I can't describe it. They are just so lovely. The shade of black, the lack of shine, etc. They look rich. I consider the look of an instrument or bow a bonus. It doesn't play a part in playability, in my point of view. But, these, what a bonus!
Packaging: These were packaged so well. Fiddlershop shipments always are, even my cello was! The Performance series bow came in the rectangle box with the end that pulls off, The Pro comes in a well-built hinged case with hooks for a strap, with the strap. Both were inside a round sturdy shipping box with the ends capped with a plastic cover and stapled in place with heavy duty staples, I think there were 5 staples.
So, that is what I have. This is how I feel about using them, again, I have only played with them for a short period of time. I felt the difference immediately with both. I do prefer the Pro on the Lord Wilton, but if I want a brighter sound for a piece, the Performance handles a nicely as the Pro. The Performance does not give it a super bright sound, but there is a slight difference. I will try them on my Parker American Fiddle later.
I used my arm a lot today, knitting machine and sewing, so, I will wait until tomorrow use them more, and also use them with my Parker. That said, even with a sore arm, I found these two bows to be a great improvement!
This is not meant as a review, but you are more than welcome to take it that way. I will do a review for the Fiddlershop site after I have used them a bit. I am just noting what I found with my bowing and sound from my violins, and how, I solved it, hopefully.

So, this has been a quiet day. I have been busy getting caught up with housework, and wanted to get some rows done on a sweater I am trying to make on my Brother kh881 flatbed knitting machine. I have some successes, but not really what I am looking for. I have not made one on this machine, yet. We will see, but I at least wanted to get a few rows done, which I did.
I am hoping to get some time in on my violin. I want to do more work on Raglan Road. We will see.
We are having quite a windy day. We lost power for a little while this morning. That is very rare for us. It came back on a few minutes later, but I had to reset my oven and microwave clocks.
Well, I hope some of the 10 visitors that are at my original Mouse's Cubby Hole come here for a visit. I posted a message inviting them here. Not beer, I hate beer, good ol' diet soda or cola, however your area refers to it.
[Image Can Not Be Found] Dang. @Fiddlerman needs to get a mouse Smiley so I can insert my signature mouse at the end of posts I do using my laptop instead of iPad. No mouse available on my laptop.

Continued use with the Pro bow, and I am still loving it. I was going to switch back and forth between the Pro and Performance, but decided to give more time each to them. I am loving the sound. I think, and this might be in my head, the bowing is smoother, It may be that I am paying attention more. Probably a combination of the bow testing and paying more attention due to bow testing, I have problems with TESTS!
I find the Lord Wilton is giving me more sound. I think it likes the Pro Bow.
I am really loving the, best I can describe, satiny black color. I think the balance, which I never really paid attention to before, so it might not be what it is, makes it feel more comfortable, still. I am thinking that what I felt initially was not all because it was a new bow. I have been using it a bit, and my impressions remain as they did at first use.

I did not get to play yesterday. I also did not get to cut my husband's hair. Yes, he trusts me with the electric slippers. They are much easier to control than the bows! I was going to cut his hair, but my arm got a charlie horse. Turns out, it was too cold to go out in the garage and do it, anyway.
I might be able to do some playing today. Arm feels pretty good, but I will wait a little while. Since I had the charlie horse, my plan to give my viola a go this week, will be put on hold to next week.
Even though the arm has loosened up, I cannot cut my husband's hair, either. It is snowing and even colder than yesterday. I think I slept through Spring, Summer and Fall. Drat!
At least I am not in the northern part of the state. They are getting a little more snow than we are.

Cool. I just played my viola. This viola has such great sound, so tlad I was able to play it without issue. It is a Fiddlerman Soloist 15.5 inch. Not sure what strings are on it. I think it might be a Fiddlerman hybrid viola bow, not sure.
Anyway, I hadn't played it in a while and it only needed tweaking a little bit to tune it.
I only played 2 songs, but it went quite well. No audio. It was a spur of the moment thing.
I did decide to order the black circle pad from Fiddlershop. The black one is a tad higher and not as squishy as the lower priced red one. think I need a lower chinrest. I just set it on my shoulder with the Fiddlerman Freedom chinrest. It only needs a tad more height, so I ordered one. Well, two of them, I am getting one for my violin, too. That will need a different chinrest, maybe, because the violin is not as deep as a viola.
That is it for now.

I had intended to play my lovely Soloist viola today, but I decided I had better wait until I get the new setup items I ordered from Fiddlershop for my viola and violin. They have been shipped, so should only be a few days more.
Because I was taking a break from the violin/viola/cello, I decided to take a break from everything and was just plain lazy today. It was interesting. Let's see, Amazon lost a pair of Easy Spirit walking sneakers I ordered. Said I could cancel and get a refund, Hmm. Let me see, the last time I did that, the item showed up, so I will wait. The price did go up $6 since I ordered them, so I am not interested in ordering later. I have no place around here that sells these, and, for me, they are very comfortable, so I will wait. They will show up. Shoe stores in my area fizzled about 15-20 years ago.
An order I placed on Amazon last night, arrived this morning, again, I cannot get the items locally.
I read a Reddit post earlier today. it was a couple years old. Someone was asking about ordering a violin from Fiddlershop, The person stated she could NOT go to a violin shop and try violins, and was wondering about buying from Fiddlershop.
Well, do people NOT read. One post said they very much recommended Fiddlershop. Others said they had know experience with Fiddlershop. Those who said they had no experience with Fiddlershop, and those who just have no online purchase experience apparently could not read.
Those people said to never buy online, Go to a violin shop and try them. Let us see. Very first thing the OP stated was that she could NOT go to a violin shop. Not means negative, no ability to go to the violin shop. I see this so much. If someone says they canNOT go to a violin shop and try violins, means they have no ability to do so. It is no help telling them to do so. If you have no opinion about the violin or store in question, do NOT tell that person to do what was stated she canNOT do.
I am not a member of any Reddit group or I would have highly recommended the violin and Fiddlershop. I also would have addressed all the close-minded people who do not understand NOT. I would have said, "What part of "canNOT go to a violin shop" do you NOT understand? Sorry, this is just so annoying to me. I read comments like that a lot when people say they canNOT go to a violin shop. Even saying the violin and Fiddlershop is very reliable, but, going to a violin shop and actually trying them out is better - not a helpful reply. Again, "What part of "canNOT go to a violin shop" do you NOT understand? It does not give that person the confidence to go ahead and purchase the violin using the method available to that person.
Well, I got that off my mind. That answer to that question, when it is stated a violin shop is NOT possible has been a thorn in my ... foot for years.
In case any guest reading this post is wondering, yes, ordering from Fiddlershop is a great way to go. I have a violin, viola and cello from them. No problems whatsoever. All done with that thorn.
I have been putting off getting groceries. Grocery shopping is one of my least favorite things to do. It is getting to the point where I will have to, bummer. My freezer is my favorite appliance. Items I can freeze are my favorite items.
I have high hopes that when I change my viola set up, that my comfort level when playing will get better. I did read some good comments about the circle dense foam disk I ordered to replace the shoulder rest. Not that exact one, but similar. Of course, people with different body builds, or way they hold the instrument will like different set up. I hope comments I read are by people similar to me is build and/or hold.
Well, gotta run. I think I will see what my plan will be to get back on track with my viola, and I will continue with my violin.

Price went up a little. I can wait a little while. Lost items showed up before. If I don't have them by mid next week, I will call them about it.
For the most part I don't have issues ordering from them. The few times I have, a phone call aways worked easily.
Little bumps keep things interesting.
On an up note, , violin went well. I only worked on Raglan Road.
