Hi,
Thanks @stringy for your kind words.
I dumped the videos I recorded on Tuesday but yesterday enjoyed success whilst learning how to use the cheap video camera I bought through eBay only costing £16.99.
At such a low cost I didn't expect much but it's much better than I expected.
Still struggling for studio time I took the opportunity yesterday to learn a bit more about the camera and used it to record me rotavating our top meadow as seen at the link above; it's the first of five videos I added; Vid#5 shows more of our site and surrounding area; we call our rear garden our mountain because it's so steep.
The rotavator is circa 1955 and was scrap when I bought it; I restored it and made four new tines. I feel at home using it because it's almost as old as I am; I turned 77 on Tuesday.
Sorry I spend so much time off topic but I'm slowly learning; I've never used a video camera so it's been a steep learning curve but now I'm confident I can start recording my violin practices once I get get into the studio.
Seeing myself for the first time on a video was enlightening; I've always been nine years old looking from the inside to the outside but looking from the outside to the inside I'm a dinosaur; the years have flown by at an alarming pace.
Today as usual I'm fully occupied but tomorrow looks promising? Thanks for your patience.
Kind regards, Col.

Hi,
Thanks @ABitRusty I hope I haven't confused anyone; it's my Yamaha YEV-104 I'm playing through my Yamaha amp not a guitar.
I feel like screaming or exploding; 3 years I've tried to get some quality time in the studio; I knocked off at 3:30 this afternoon determined to enjoy at least half an hour in the studio but no chance; something more important needed doing; it's driving me mad.
Kind regards, Col.

Hi,
Many thanks @ABitRusty Yes I'll keep at it but because I've played my violin so little for quite a while I think I've forgotten the basics. I'm finding a bit more time now to get into the studio and I'm concentrating on scales trying to develop my ear. I'm still only playing with four fingers towards the peg box because I can't find a suitable shoulder rest; shifting is a problem as is supporting the violin with my left hand for longer than 30 minutes; I start off OK with a light grip but eventually it turns into a death grip until I notice my hand hurts; I need to sort this out but in the meantime I'm practicing as much as time allows.
I'm practicing on the A string and with the "Snark" electronic tuner switched on I firstly ensure the violin is in tune then I have a go at playing the notes; I close my eyes and move my left hand and then try playing the note I want to hear before opening my eyes whilst still playing; it seems to be working because I can now get pretty near; I'm also finding the difference by just moving my finger a small amount either way to find flats and sharps; it's not easy but it's also not impossible; my studio is to the rear of our detached bungalow so I'm not driving anyone mad although I could use my good quality earphones if needed. Just learning the scales is so interesting and hopefully when I sort out a shoulder rest I can then learn the major scales.
I didn't understand the difference regarding major scales; having only ever played near the peg box I've played from open G down to C then gone to the D string etc; now I find there are lots of other notes on the same string; it's all so complicated as a novice learning from YouTube videos and information generously supplied by forum members; it's very slow going but it doesn't bother me; I'm well past scaring our local cats and now playing anything at all is enjoyable.
There are lots of very useful violin tutorials on the this forum including playing major scales which I want to be looking at.
I'm still ultra busy; Bron has an hospital appointment today and an hospital appointment tomorrow at different hospitals and on the 20th yet another hospital appointment at a third hospital; Bron is in considerable pain finding it hurts her a great deal just to visit the bathroom; she's housebound only struggling to visit hospitals and the surgery; things will improve once Bron has her knee replaced but date as yet unknown for the operation; the appointment on the 20th is regarding this; tomorrows appointment is regarding her Parkinson's Disease. Sorry to bang on about this but we have little control over our lives the way things are; Bron's already been in A&E twice having taken a fall so I daren't leave her alone for long hence my limited violin playing but I'm not at all complaining; I love my Bron to bits and the studio is always there waiting for me.
Breakfast for me then shopping done by 7:20 this morning including a visit to the surgery; back home and prepare for dinner; now I'm catching up on emails and popping onto the forum; I'm now free for an hour so I'm about to head into the studio but I'll make Bron comfortable first; not all novice violin players are 77 years of age with lots of ongoing problems; I will do my best whatever is thrown at me; Bron is still with me so I'm happy.
Kind regards, Col.

Great to keep hearing from you colin, really sorry to hear about your missus health problems, and I hope she is ok.
Abitrusty isnt wrong when he says its hard to play any instrument, but you are on the right forum for any advice you need, I think of it like a close knit community on here, with really nice people, not all these forums are like that, as you probably know.
I think the main thing you have to keep in mind more than anything else is to enjoy yourself, thats what its all about, for me anyway good luck and stay well.

Hi,
Thank you so much for your kindness @stringy Two hospital appointments successfully sorted out this week with just the main one on the 20th to look forward to.
I'm now working in short violin practices each day between other more pressing jobs/chores I need to do; one day I even managed three short practices much to my delight. I intended to do more rotavating in the garden today getting it ready for winter but it's raining so I'm not worried; I'll head into the studio instead.
I'm giving the violin "A" string a good work out learning the scales and using four fingers towards the peg box I'm getting much better at hitting the correct notes; the "A" string C# really lets me know when I find it; I've not fully understood the importance of flats and sharps but now I'm finding my way around; at the moment I'm still using the tuner trying to get my ears in tune and by playing over and over I will eventually win but it's slow going; short practices are working better than trying for long practices because if I try to play too much I lose concentration.
I've also emailed the luthier I've dealt with in the past asking if he's still in business but as yet no reply; I'd like him to check over my violin and bow also to assist with sorting out a suitable shoulder rest then I can make better progress; I'm stuck unable to shift and I'm worried about dropping the violin if I try; as time permits I'll look wider if I need to and once Bron is more mobile and I can leave her home alone knowing she's safe I'll try to find a music store who might be able to help me; I've already looked at local violin tutors who can pay home visits but until Bron is well again I need to hang back a bit.
Yes; @ABitRusty is bang on when he says playing a violin is difficult but as you rightly say @stringy I've got access to a great deal of help and friendliness here on the forum which keeps my enthusiasm alive driving me on. I'm a member of quite a few assorted forums and all forums aren't equal. My friend David describes just a few forum members on other forums as "Tall Poppies" these members like to be above everyone else demonstrating their vast knowledge on every subject but never showing what they achieve. I've come up against this a number of times but eventually I just place them on "Ignore"; I won't accept toxic people into my life.
I ramble on a great deal about why I struggle so much learning to play a violin but it's real life to Bron and I; Bron is hoping for an early knee replacement operation date when she visits the consultant on the 20th then we'll both have something to look forward to once Bron is well again. In the meantime I'm still working flat out every day especially in the gardens (sorry yards; I keep forgetting; yards here in the UK are entirely different to yards in America hence my references to gardens; my spelling too might seem strange).
10am and it's increasingly dark outside; typical of Yorkshire in the UK. Just looking out it's pouring down with rain but looks to have either hail or sleet with it; we're just into Autumn.
Thanks again @stringy if ever I don't enjoy picking up my violins and they bringing a smile to my face I'll pack in but now I've got the studio to play in I think violins are now with me for life; violins are always challenging with so much to learn; I'll never be an expert violin player and really don't want to be; whilst challenges are there I never become bored and who can in fact ever become bored playing a violin.
Time now to wander into the studio.
Kind regards, Col.

Hi,
Will I ever get into my studio in peace. Whilst learning to play scales on my Yamaha YEV-104 "A" string I suddenly found the note "D" refused to play correctly; at times it sounded strange other times the bow simply slid over the string without playing at all; the electronic tuner was also all over the place; I tried more rosin but no change. The string shows in tune. I've just emailed GEAR4MUSIC asking for their help in choosing the correct original type ZYEX A string. It's pointless guessing so I've asked.
More trouble; this time a day of total frustration when Win10 updated causing chaos with my desktop; it changed my keyboard from UK English to USA English and there's a great deal of difference between the two. Also all my favourites disappeared including passwords; I reset the keyboard so at least I could hit a key and it was correct but then the fun really started; hours later I was up and running again; it had also changed my browser; it was messed up big style but eventually I regained my original browser and at last everything was back to normal; all I wanted to log on for was to buy a violin string; I could scream.
Today I've been grounded because of friends visiting which of course we enjoy. Tomorrow is full of hope? Just one long weary tale of woe every time I want a bit of studio time. My luthier replied stating he is now fully retired not accepting work but is happy to advise as best he can by email which is very kind and generous of him. I'll let him enjoy his retirement in peace so now I'm without luthier. I don't get along with good luck but I'll keep banging away.
Kind regards, Colin.

Hi,
Thanks @ABitRusty . I've just come out of the studio after an hours enjoyment practicing on the A string; I removed my glasses and had a very close look at the A string; I noticed what looked like a knife cut along the string for about an inch in length which was strange so out of curiosity I gently used my thumb nail to lightly scrape the string and was surprised to see clean metal appear so I carried on gently using my thumb nail to clean all the string section to the bridge where I play with the bow; then I wiped the string with a micro fiber cloth; the string was now definitely clean.
Next I used the micro fiber cloth to give the bow hairs a good wipe removing lots of rosin; now I applied fresh rosin and the string plays nicely. I'll still buy a spare string.
Feeling much happier I turned my attention to the Yamaha amp; I've been playing with it set on "Crunch" but now tried "Clean" and what a terrific difference; the clean was much sharper but sounded totally different. Set on "Lead" it went ballistic and on yet another selection it shrieked; I've so much to learn; not just the violin but also my studio gear.
I've been browsing the web for a large musical instrument store but they're all a good distance away otherwise I'd visit with my violin and request to be set up with a shoulder rest to suit me; it's hopeless at the moment; after a bit of playing my left hand starts to hurt due to holding the violin up. I'm stuck every way I turn at the moment; I daren't leave Bron home alone in case she takes another nasty tumble and because she's so ill she can't accompany me in the car.
I'm still having a go at learning scales as far as my fingers can reach but I'm unable to shift; I'm downright stubborn and will keep practicing but it's becoming clear I'll end up playing my violins for my own pleasure and interest; at least I'll keep playing and eventually will add a better more in tune video onto YouTube; I'm not holding my breath because it's going to take a long time. My arm's too tired to carry on but perhaps this evening I'll wander into the studio again.
Kind regards, Col.

Hi,
I've been trying to adjust my Bon-Musica shoulder rest and on my Yamaha YEV104 thought I'd got it pretty near until I stood up unaware I was standing on the jack lead which pulled the shoulder rest off. Having spent what seemed like ages I gave up with the Yamaha and tried it on my 1880 German acoustic violin; I can get it near but still can't get it just right; I had to give up this morning due to shoulder pain; I'm confident I'll sort it out but as usual it's taking time.
Hunching up trying to keep the violin in position and also wrapping my left thumb around the violin neck are bad; I've just been watching a video on YouTube; I'll make every mistake and fall into every hole before I make real progress. Whilst I had the shoulder rest adjusted to near allowing me to shift I then found I'd completely lost my usual bow positions so this too will need readjusting.
I also have a Wolf Forte Secondo shoulder rest but soon gave up trying to use this.
Nothing changes much; I've just visited the pharmacy to collect a prescription then drove over to the garage which serviced our car; each time I turned on the ignition a message appeared stating "Attention needed now" this referred back to the car service I had carried out this message hadn't been deleted and it's taken well over a month until I've had time to return to the garage; it was only a two minute job but driving took a lot longer.
I'll resume shoulder rest hostilities this evening; I need to sort the shoulder rest out because I keep playing with a death grip on the violin neck. If I could leave Bron home alone without fear of her falling then probably I could seek help but I'm stuck. There are excellent YouTube videos showing how to fit and adjust shoulder rests including a long video on the Bon-Musica.
Kind regards, Col.

I'll resume shoulder rest hostilities this evening…
@Retired,
I’m so happy to see that you’ve found the Bon Musica! Give it time and you will love it!
I was going to suggest this to you recently, but I rarely get time to do forum posts. I took a look at your video before and the Bon Musica should be perfect for you, as it is for me. Thin people with distinct necks and collar bones with no “natural padding” thrive with the Bon Musica! I also own a Yamaha YEV-104 in addition to my traditional violins. It is such a beautiful instrument with lovely tone even when it’s not amplified! It makes quieter practice a pleasure. By the way, you will not be resuming “shoulder rest hostilities this evening” because the sweet Bon Musica is your new best friend. Just give yourself time to get to know each other well.😊
I’ll share some tips that I’ve discovered. First, one more thing, treat yourself to a Chin Smart Chinrest Cover for Violin (about $9.99 US) online. It is brilliant and you should position it to cover all the nasty metal work on every violin that bites into your bones and flesh. With the Bon Musica and Chin Smart your instruments will feel cozy!! Plus you’ll play with proper form.
- Don’t try to adjust your Bon Musica to work on two instruments at first. Stick with only one violin and get it right. Get accustomed to using it.
- After a while, try the Bon Musica on your other instrument. If it works just as well, then you’re good. HOWEVER, you will probably find that each violin requires a slight bit of adjustment and even more so on the YEV-104. If you can splurge on owning a Bon Musica for each instrument you play, you will really enjoy tweaking the fit to perfection and playing in constant comfort.
- Don’t expect or try to get the adjustment just right in one session. Tweak the Bon Musica a tiny bit each time you play over a week or so, focusing on just one adjustment at a time. You’ll attain perfect comfort.
- Most folks position a shoulder rest on bit of a diagonal across the back of the violin, rather than perfectly straight across.
- You have the mechanical ability and tinkering drive to suss this out. You won’t fatigue the metal and split it like some of the vidiots complain of. Peek under the foam padding on the Bon Musica and notice the additional adjustment holes. You can offset the two pieces from each other if needed! You can adjust the length. For some reason, the Bon Musica ships with one corner bent down into a chest gouge. That’s the first thing I straighten up for sure!
- The goal is to be able to hold the violin hands free for a minute with no stress on your chin, neck or collar bone. Of course, you’ll never actually play hands free, but the Bon Musica’s support will give you freedom of motion for tone, vibrato, shifting, fluidity.
- And please, don’t assault it with bolt cutters or mangle it in all the horrific ways that the plump-necked internet critics do. Use your ingenuity and patience and you’ll love the Bon Musica.
- Also, if you’d like to become unleashed instead of unhinged (joke 😀), look into the wireless devices to connect to the amp. We got one from Fiddlershop at Christmas. One device plugs into the amp. The other part plugs into either your YEV or your new electric guitar. No more tripping on the lead!

Hi @Retired,
I have the same setup as you - a YEV104 with the Bon Musica shoulder rest. Take your time and don't get discouraged. It took me probably 20 adjustments until I finally got it moved around and bent to fit me properly. I watched the video of you in your garden and I have a body build similar to yours, so it will work if you play around with it a bit. It's a cross between comfort on your shoulder and balance on the violin because the YEV is a bit heavier than an acoustic.
Another hint about the jack cord. I damaged a lot of amp cords when I played guitar or amplified accordion in a country band until I finally switched to a coiled cord (similar to an old style corded telephone.) When I use a straight cord with my YEV104, I make about a two foot loop in the cord and tuck it in my belt or back pocket to give me extra slack so if I step on it, it has some extra give and you will notice it before it damages the cord or pulls the violin out of your hands (heaven forbid!)
Hope this helps you.

Hi,
Thanks so much @Unfretted for your excellent encouraging reply. I'm 6' tall and a shade over ten stones; my old chum at work used to call me a stick insect; I've been the same weight since leaving school 62 years ago; I'm too busy to put weight on so as you rightly say I've got no chest padding at all.
I didn't get into the studio last evening but I've just been in the studio playing around with the Bon-Musica still without full success but getting nearer with each attempt. I bought the Bon-Musica a couple of years ago having watched this excellent YouTube video;
At the time I did try using it but was always needed elsewhere and it wouldn't fit my violin even with the screws at maximum distance hence now I've a bit more time I've returned to it; I needed to bend or straighten it in order for it to fit which it now does. The Bon-Musica is an excellent aid and for me I doubt it can be bettered; patience and perseverance will ensure success. My Yamaha YEV-104 is my favourite violin and connects to the correct Yamaha amp. I'm rather concerned as I attach shoulder rests to it not wanting to distort it adding too much pressure and after each use I remove the shoulder rest; my acoustic violins seem more robust in this respect.
I understand your comment @Unfretted regarding positioning the shoulder rest at an angle; this morning I completely lost the plot so I stopped and I'll view the video again until I understand what I need to do. I think I'll stick with the Yamaha because I don't store this in a case making access very quick.
Thanks I've got the correct shoulder rest and I've also got a very comfortable soft leather chin rest cover so two things already in my favour. Your tip about straightening the lower curve I've already tried but perhaps this needs more tweaking too; this Bon-Musica has so many adjustments to play around with making it rather difficult for me as a novice to understand which to adjust so I'll just stick with it; I won't be buying any other make of shoulder rest.
I've got a Line 6 Relay which was quite expensive bought in order to remove the long jack cable but even this has a very short cable; one I can't trip over or stand upon; this morning the Yamaha amp had a pronounced hum which changed as I touched the jack cable; I think the Line 6 will eliminate the hum; I need to try using it again; it cost too much to leave lying around unused. I'll look into other devices too; I have seen one a long time ago not needing any cable at all as you mention; I could always sell the Line 6 and upgrade but as usual it's all down to time.
Many thanks also to you @Grandpafiddle for your information and useful hints; much appreciated. I think it's going to take over 100 adjustments before I'm comfortable with the Bon-Musica; I'll keep trying but this morning I got it near and could shift but it still needs more adjusting because it quickly gives me shoulder ache; I'm just bony with little excess weight to carry around; I'm pleased I don't live in Texas though having viewed YouTube videos.
Being a mechanical engineer I understand levers and this applies to shoulder rests as I see it; the further up the body towards the violin neck then less pressure is put on the chin; I'll work it out but as you say comfort and balance are so important; who'd have ever thought a violin rest could be so complicated but then everything I've thus far found out about violins everything is complicated. Your comments about jack cords are bang on; as explained earlier I bought a Line 6 in order to get rid of the jack cord so I need to address this problem before I either trip and hurt myself or cause damage to my violin or amp.
Got to go but many thanks once again for your help @Unfretted and @Grandpafiddle I'll stick with the Bon-Musica and look into going totally jack cable free; it all takes so much time.
Kind regards, Col.

Hi,
Absolutely incredible; I finally sat down at the computer and started watching a YouTube video on how to adjust a violin chin rest; the doorbell stopped this; it was our lovely Russian neighbour with her adorable daughter bringing us a gift which was kind and generous of them.
I'm pretty near now using the Bon-Musica shoulder rest and have tried many adjustments then I remembered; below the violin is the shoulder rest adjustment above the violin is the chin rest adjustment so I wanted to watch the video; this might be the final adjustment I need to make but as usual I can't spend much time in the studio; yesterday was taken up with another hospital appointment; it's one long struggle to get into the studio but hopefully Bron will have her new knee by then and be recovering; everything takes so much time and shortly I'll be preparing another meal; I grab the bits of time I can but it's not the way to learn anything; I'll now watch the chin rest video during tea time then I won't be bouncing around for 30 minutes.
I'm keen to get the shoulder & chin rests sorted out before trying to play the violin again; one step at a time.
Kind regards, Col.

Hi,
Life for me is more things to occupy my time and on it goes. Our NHS (National Health Service) here in the UK are truly brilliant for Bron and I. Bron has more hospital and surgery appointments ahead of her and now I'm joining in; I've got three lots of vaccinations shortly; (Comment removed by Mouse.)
Since last posting I've not touched my violin and don't know when I'll next touch it; I was at the supermarket by 6:45 this morning and am just having a mug of tea before getting busy again.
I have managed to buy a transmitter & receiver pair through eBay at £14.99 in readiness for when I can next get into the studio; hopefully no more cable to stand on.
As usual mug of tea over and back to my hectic life.
Kind regards, Col.

Thanks for this red desert video, Col. I've just watched it (I'm anfxyz if you read any of the comments. Sometimes I'm scurrilous, so don't expect to agree with everything I say on Youtube.)
I sorted my BM out yesterday. I'll post this and its two companion videos (did you spot them both?) in my blog

Hi,
Thanks Andrew; you kindly posted on the 26th Sept now it's 2nd Oct and the first chance I've had to respond. During breakfast this morning I finally watched parts 2 & 3 of the Red Desert videos finding both very interesting and informative. No; sorry I've not had time to view your blog; things still aren't going well for me at all.
It's poured solid with rain for two full days and I thought at last this morning it's drying up but once again it's a black hole and bucketing down as I type.
Our Skoda Yeti has popped a small diesel leak and I'm finding it hugely frustrating; I lifted the bonnet (hood) yesterday using a torch trying to locate the leak but even with the torch it was too dark and the rain didn't do me any favours; I've just tried phoning the garage I use and received "Please leave a message" things are fighting me whichever way I turn.
I've not been into the studio since I last posted due to many demands upon my time; Bron is counting the days until the 22nd when she has her assessment before surgery to replace her knee; it's now become a full time job caring for Bron who is in terrible pain every time she stands; it's distressing me too watching her suffer. This isn't retirement it's punishment; fortunately I'm still fit enough to look after Bron and I want her once again standing upright; pain free by my side as soon as possible; I've not given up with violins but as the way things are trying to get into the studio is just a torment. Sunshine is forecast for later today; I can dream on. Sorry for being such a misery.
Kind regards, Col.
