7552162459b12198182c9d9e795b92c3.jpgI've only had time to start on a few tunes I've been meaning to learn & experiment with for the Holidays this year.  Been mostly going over tunes I've already recorded for past Christmas Parties, to refresh my old fingers.

I do find once Holiday-related tunes are out of sight, they're out of mind - and there's a BUNCH of Christmas threads scattered all over the forum!

So, this blog can be a hub of old thread links, new ideas & tutorials that will hopefully encourage myself (and others here) to test out new Holiday tunes throughout the year.

Note: I learn mostly by ear, using bowing that feels most natural... a melody is a melody to me, nomatter what instrument I hear it played on - or if it is sung.

I do try to show (or link) free notation & video tutorials - when easily found.  There's some A.I. programs that convert sound to notation... I'm sure they'll improve, but folks on the forum can help, too - just ask!

I'll start with Baroque (AND earlier) Christmas time music.

Maybe it's Not Too Early for Baroque or Medieval Christmas Thread

There's a lot of VERY beautiful music in this thread!  I know I can add more to it (hope others will, too).

Jeez, forgot I had bought VIOLA music because of it... now I need to find it!

Classical Christmas - 'Tis the season? Thread

There's a wonderful Rebecca Clarke composition.  I'm sure others have Classical favorites to add here, too.

JUL! Get Those Reindeer Ready! Thread

6eade0efeee711bb8194a23da4852cce--reindeer.jpg

There's more GREAT NORDIC music I want to learn in that thread!  I've been able to add some new (to me) music I'm excited about.

Working on Höken, in between wrapping gifts (and typing). 🤶

Posted this (last year in my EV blog) about some of the many Finn's that settled in Michigan's Upper Peninsula - expecting to get snow dumped on them at this time of year.  We have a little snow today, but not like I remember as a kid!

❄⛄❄⛄❄⛄❄⛄❄⛄❄⛄❄⛄❄⛄❄

I hate El Niño!  We have a measly amount of snow & think it's all because no one has done the...

'Heikki Lunta Dance'!  dunno

Yep, folks in our Upper Michigan know the secret!

The Dancing Snow God That Brings Blizzards to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula

AND, he has his own SongSo, the Sunny 101.9 radio station up in Marquette County played the song 12 days ago - it worked, 33" on the ground in the 'Big Bay' area (snowing now)!  But here's 'my' favorite version (different than the original, a little rock'n roll) "Heikki Lunta Snow Dance"! 🤣 ...maybe it would work for me - where's those grandkids when I need 'em?

Heikinpäivä

In 1999, the Finnish Theme Committee of the City of Hancock created a new Finnish-American celebration – Heikinpäivä. The celebration’s themes are taken from Finnish folk saying associated with the name day for Heikki (January 19th).

I still have a lot to add here, but I was in serious trouble early this morning!

Woke up with the feeling of a familiar tune, so grabbed my Maezarine (6-string fiddle) - sure enough, I obviously knew how to play it... but what the heck was it???  I knew there were lyrics - drew a complete blank. 😔

Thought it was something for Winter, so check'd to see if I recorded it (nope), then check'd my little notebook - I'm supposed to write every title in it as I learn a tune (obviously slacked off there!), so spent what seemed FOREVER searching abums! 🤬

...jeez, so perfect for today, too!  'The Snows They Melt the Soonest'  There's several really nice recordings by different folks.

I'm glad we got some snow, but I'm sure folks down South got some & aren't too happy (except maybe the kids).  Even with cloudy skies, everything is brighter with snow! 😎

'The Snows They Melt the Soonest' (notation & info) - it's a beautiful old air from Northern England!

Don't think I'll ever forget the name again, but wrote it down anyway. 😉

Tried it yet?

Sting - A Winter's Night (Live from Durham Cathedral).

Some of the songs & carols are VERY old, some original.  I'm sure everone has played at least one of these tunes (they're listed in the video description, but I'll add them below).  ...this might be posted elsewhere, but I couldn't find it.

01. Intro (Sting/A Winter's Night Concert)

02. The Snow It Melts The Soonest 01:50 - pretty sure this is how I fell in love with this tune (& enjoy playing it)

03. Gabriel's Message 05:42

04. Soul Cake 09:15 - some great fiddling in this, a good tune to improvise over.

05. There Is No Rose Of Such Virtue 15:20

06. Lo How A Rose E'er Blooming 20:11 - everyone play this?

07. Christmas At Sea 24:54

08. Now Winter Comes Slowly 30:42

09. Cold Song 33:52

10. The Burning Babe 38:20

11. Ghost Story 42:33

12. Team Spirit 47:38

13. The Hounds Of Winter 51:40

14. Cherry Tree Carol 58:36 - some folks have to be playing this one!

15. Balulalow 1:02:55

16. Bethelehem Down 1:07:06

17. Coventry Carol 1:10:40 - love playing this!

18. Lullaby For An Anxious Child 1:19:37

19. I Saw Three Ships 1:20:46 - everyone play this?

20. You Only Cross My Mind In Winter 1:25:40

I have this recorded on my DVR, Post 5. Excellent. I don't play any of them on an instrument. Not my thing to play, but I really liked this show when I saw it. It was on AXS. Recorded it 12/25/24.

Sting - A Winter's Night (Live from Durham Cathedral).

I understand if you aren't interested in playing like Sting sings, but some of the songs come from traditional music, usually included in Christmas Caroling Books.  If, at a later time, you'd like to learn the basic melody of any - I'm sure forum members can help find notation you can print.  'The Snow it Melts the Soonest' is also known as 'January Snow' (this link is for free printable notation).
