Hello everyone!
I’m an adult violin student; fairly new to all this. It has been a dream of mine to play for many years, but it wasn’t until I happened across a clearance violin in a local music shop that I took the plunge and started my journey.
I’m very excited to continue learning, as I’ve always found music enables a kind of expression that nothing else does. So far I’ve been enjoying every minute. I love going to my lessons and look forward to getting home from work and having time to practice. I only wish there were more hours in a day so I had more time to devote to it!

@Flasharoo welcome to the Fiddlerman's forum. This is the best place to learn how to play the violin (or fiddle). There are some great folks that hang out hear and will do whatever they can to help out.
Most of us are later adult starters. Some more advanced than others, but all willing to help us out. I started in 1996 taking lessons, but after a couple of years my teacher left the state (I keep wondering if I contributed to that!) and since then I've been a self learner. That's how I came upon this forum. There are numerous videos demonstrating different bowing and fingering techniques at all levels.
One of the best features are the projects where Fiddlerman sets a theme and asks us to submit videos of us playing along. No matter how badly we think our playing is, some how he is able to put together a composite concert that sounds great!
Take a look at the latest Christmas project and consider joining in. No pressure, no criticism, great fun.

@Flasharoo -
Welcome to The Fiddlerman Forum!
Sounds like you've been put under a spell by your violin -
just like the rest of us!
What type of music do you look forward to playing?
Like Bob said, we will soon have a Christmas Group Project you can participate in! There are easy parts - soon, there will be tracks to follow (with the beat) and tutorials to help.
You can follow the thread here:
Fiddlerman White Christmas Virtual Group Project
Really glad you found us!

I’m looking forward to being able to play soooo many things… I already have my instructor on a quest to see if she can find sheet music for the intro to Secrets by OneRepublic. 😂
But my first introduction was the TransSiberian Orchestra. Even as a child I loved them and would beg for their albums for Christmas. It would be a dream to be able to play God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen. I know I will never sound like them (if for no other reason than I won’t have the accompaniment - so you can’t say im being too hard on myself! 😆) but just to be able to play it would be a dream come true.
Aside from that, I’m looking forward to pieces that really let emotion out. Life is hard, I want my music to tell a story. I want people to feel something when they hear it, as I’m sure we all do. 🙂

That’s so cool! It’s like guitar hero for the violin! Too bad that was always my sister’s game and I was terrible at it. 🤣
Thanks!

You can slow the video speed down in the settings - then, enlarge the video so you can better see where to place your fingers on the fingerboard (over to the right).
Right click to 'Loop', then stop/replay ONE small part at a time - you'll have it memorized quicker than you think, especially if you have listened to this tune quite a bit. 🤗

Oh, wonderful! I have… I have all the words to the song memorized. ☺️ It would be such fun if my teacher found the sheet music to the intro and taught it to me, and then I just took off playing the rest of the song! 😂 She would be so confused. 😆 I’m going to have to make this a priority now, just for fun! 😊😇

Hi,
A belated welcome to the forum from me too @Flasharoo. I'm a new member of this fabulous forum and soon settled in; the members are so helpful and informative whilst being ever so friendly. You and I have something in common in that I also fancied trying to play a violin for many years and have finally got around to it.
I'm finding violins to be addictive and I don't think there's a cure. Enjoy your journey and I truly hope you succeed with your dream of playing "God rest ye merry gentlemen". Good luck.
Kind regards, Colin.
