Hi everyone!
I've been lurking on this forum for a while now while waiting for my pretty Stentor II to arrive, and you seem to be such a lovely bunch of people! Now it's time to tell you something about myself.
My name is Alma, I'm 26 years old and I live on the nineteenth floor of one of the few tall builings in Stockholm. Aside from being a huge violin nerd in the making, I enjoy dancing (line dance and modern jazz), climbing and clicker training my cat.
Nine-year-olds in Sweden are all encouraged to choose an instrument to learn in school. I wanted to play the violin – always with the ambition, Alma! – but my mum discouraged me, saying she tried it at that age and it was a really difficult instrument. So I took up the piano instead. Then I was in a theater/music class in junior high, where I got to try out several other instruments like drums, electric bass and steelpan. Also, I have a half-uncle who builds nyckelharpa, a traditional Swedish instrument much like a violin but with heaps of buttons and more than a dozen strings...
So anyway, I know how to read music, but had never even touched a violin until very recently. Although I'm decent on the piano, I never really put my heart into playing anything, but that's about to change now!
I fell in love with the violin this summer, for the weirdest reason. Did I mention that I have very strong nerdiness tendencies? Well, I've been watching the BBC rendition of Sherlock Holmes on repeat since early spring as well as reading all the original books, and all of a sudden, I just noticed his violin playing. I thought "wow, that's such a beautiful instrument, why did I never learn to play that?" So I started googling, youtubing and generally nerding out about it, until getting my own violin was utterly inevitable. And now here I am.

Thanks guys!
Kevin: are you thinking of the movie with Jude Law and whosit? Haven't seen that one, only the BBC version with Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. Did he kill the flies, then, with the sound waves? That's pretty cool, but I've already got a cat to do the fly-killing in my household...

I am a huge Sherlock Holmes fan as well. And I agree...one of my fav parts about Sherlock is that he plays the violin. Don't all us geniuses? Anyways...glad to have you on here. You are right, we ARE all a bunch of really cool cats. You will be ever so welcome here. Keep us posted on your progress.

I've got my violin! My sister took our picture today:
KindaScratchy: Clicker training is going great. I've got a video from May that I just put on my new (violin related) YouTube account, and I'll try my best to embed it here. However, I'm as big a noob on forum usage as on the violin, so we'll see how it goes... Tim is more skilled now – she does things more readily when I say the commands and knows some more tricks. This was filmed when she was still a kitten.
Also, you can read about the nyckelharpa here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nyckelharpa
gkeese: LOL!

Thank you all for your warm welcomes!
KindaScratchy: Yup, Tim is a tortie. Cutest cat colouring, wouldn't you agree? And I think the clicker training works on her just because she's such a glutton... if there's prawn to be had, she'll do anything to get it...
CircleTilde: Love you nickname and corresponding avatar! Hope to get a presentation of your violin too once it arrives.
I'll try to make a video of my playing soon, although I'm afraid anything but open strings is just noise at the moment. But what with all you "helpful know-it-alls" (the best kind of know-it-all, I must say!), that will soon improve, hopefully!

Hi Alma, I'm late to the party as usual, but read your great posts and wanted to say "howdie" and "welcome" and "so glad you are on the forum"; THIS is the greatest place in the world, lol,,,, can't believe Denny called us a cult, lmao!
Very interesting what event actually prompted you to take the plunge. I'm and old guy and have been wanting to play violin/fiddle for 30yrs, and a video of an incredible fiddler was all it took to push me over.
Very glad you're here! This is truly the wackiest bunch of wonderful people I've seen in one place.

Fiddlerman, do you consider yourself part Swedish, having lived in Malmö for so long? (I read your interview on the forum.) I consider you part Swedish, at any rate Do you know how many Swedes there are on this forum? Tack för välkomnandet och för en fantastisk sida!
ftufc, I think Denny called you a cult in a very affectionate way. And in a way you are, because I think most people here couldn't leave you and their violins if they wanted to!
