Hello! So I've been lurking for a while (made one post some months ago), but I thought that I should introduce myself and participate a little more.

I'd always wanted to learn to play the violin, so after finishing my undergraduate studies and finding myself with free time, I began to teach myself. I didn't exert myself much for the first few months, but about a year ago I began to take it seriously, and practicing has more or less become my primary hobby.

I haven't found a tutor yet and have been relying entirely on books and online videos, trying hard to catch and rectify any bad habits along the way. Since the violin is my first instrument, I also had to teach myself how to read music and the fundamentals of music theory. That being said, I think my abilities have come along nicely, and that there are two key milestones for a beginning violinist: first, when neighbors say that listening to you practice makes their day, and second, when you get wasted and your ability to walk gives out before your ability to play.

A bientôt !

Truly a remarkable feat, that last point you made!

Anyhow, welcome to the forum, I am a fellow lurker myself. I make posts here and there, but I haven't had a lot of free time lately (or internet) to indulge in the pleasures of the good company of the members here.
Either way though, it's been a rewarding experience to say the least, and I am sure that if you can come out of lurking, I shall too! I look forward to your posts.

Welcome, Johannes! Glad you came out of the shadows. Nice that you've passed some significant milestones. I'm sure you're very proud, especially of that last one.

Welcome aboard Johannes!  Congrats on starting your learning process and sticking to it :) .   I've found that method books really help a lot for me at least.  I've gone to a couple teachers so far but one only put me on songbooks which don't have much in the way of warm ups or exercises.

ROFL
That is impressive.
Thanks for your introduction and I'm really happy that you decided to join in on the conversations. We like to encourage each other here and participating gives us the urge to work harder and remind us to play when we are bored or itching to make music. :-)
