I'm going to devote my time to practicing scales for a few weeks, but that's not very interesting. It's like housework. You have to do it.
In the meantime, there's a song I like that I want to learn to play, so I went online to find sheet music. It took hours but I finally found the melody in the key of C Major. That's fine, but I'm also learning to play cello and I wanted a piano score so I could play two cello parts and two violin parts and dub them all together. I finally found a piano score in the key of F Major. I don't like F Major. I found a transposing graph to help me change the piano score to C Major. Then I found free software online that you can use to transcribe music. Now I'm busy making my own sheet music. So that's my progress so far.
If I had a musical education this would all be so much simpler.
I know the feeling! Frustrating, right?!
You'll learn eventually. I do not know notes. I think it is about time, but I have never been able to read notes. I tried learning about 12 times. But it just vanished from my head as quickly as it stuck.
Though I have practiced transpositioning stuff as far as scales goes. It's actually quite simple once you get the hang of it. It's just that you have to literally crack the code Good luck with that! And also.. It is still not too late to ask on misc. forums and so on for help in learning

I hope links are allowed. Here is the software I got. It doesn't transpose, but it transcribes:

For transposing I found a graph. It's pretty easy to understand:

There's a program called Finale 2012 that transposes, but it costs money. You can download a free trial for 30 days here:
I've learned so much from my mistakes that I've decided to make some more.

I don't know how committed you may be but I want to mention a super little ($49) program called NoteWorthy Composer. It writes, transposes, does midi and I think there is a trial version available. I've used it for writing for about 10 years even though I have 3 other similar programs. I hope it is as good as it used to be
