Thanks for resurrecting the post BCShalom

I haven't needed much additional motivation to practice although I am VERY guilty of running before I can walk. I need to sit down and really evaluate my goal within a year and how I can get there.

I just printed out FM's "Fiddlerman's Goal Planner" sheet to try to help me get organized.

I keep my violin sitting right my my computer within reach on a small table.

The videos people posted here honestly motivate me. Thank you to all who have posted.

YouTube and the many great people there posting videos actually inspired me to pick up the violin.

I REALLY want to play the Vielle too but that will probably never happen unless KK decides to make one LOL! - So this desire also keeps me motivated too.  ;)

Thank you for the list FM, and to everyone else for their ideas. With the crazy holiday season coming up so soon I will really need to find at least 20 minutes each day to be able to actually play. At night I am stuck doing quiet things.  :/

On "Cheap eBay violins" … Just tell people they are like a Charlie Brown Christmas Tree.  With a little love, and some practice, they too can be made beautiful.

Looking back on the four years I have been trying. I can tell you there has been many ups and downs.

It seems that I always want to play something beyond my ability.  I buy music, get frustraded, and it ends up in the wicker basket I have for furture pieces.

Then I settle down and start playing scales. Until I hear another song that "I am sure I can work through" Ha.

So now I am back to basics hammering out scales. But with each valley and plateu comes a little improvement .

The amazing thing is that, I have never gotton frustrated with the violin just the music.  I still can't walk by  the thing without picking it up.

I like the way you said, you keep it close at hand, same here. Not having to get it out of the case makes all the difference.

Thats probably why I dont play my electric much.(Set up time).

Any way , keep up the work. It gets better all the time.  violin-student

Only 20 minutes  a day?  Really?  I mess with the thing for hours, and still wish I had more time.  I have even forgotten my guitars. ugh...   I guess I am addicted again!  LOL.  How many hours a day should one practice?  I hope that I have something to post soon to make sure I am not developing any bad habits.

I review each step in your lesson videos, FM, each day and try to do what  your doing.  My bowing I feel is much better I think.  At least I know when I am not concentrating, usually when put all my attention on my fingering.  Oy, it's a vicious cycle.  But I really feel that I am learning something.  Then I watch the flight of the Bumble bee and get discouraged!!  LOL, NOT.

People, people, people.  I'm lucky to have two open (and forgiving) jams a week in my little mountain village (Saranac Lake, NY), but the computer - Fiddlerman.com provide even more people to connect with. I don't know anyone who, as a kid or student or even college kid or adult, could stick with something as hard as the violin without others to share with and learn from - companionship to share the journey with.  So... thanks Fiddlerman and Fiddlerman forum!

I find that the music you can create after learning the basics is enough to keep me interested. I sometimes sit or stand or whatever and just play stuff at random and find all the practice in that. Even vibrato...

Yes, I have a particular tune I'm polishing intently and I feel every day I play it just a little better but with each day I play better I hear one more thing in my recordings that I think I can make smoother, clearer, more in tune or better and I go back the next day to again, play better than I did yesterday.cheers

Motivation comes and goes.  Some days you can't wait to get to an instrument, and other days it may feel like a chore.  But if you do it anyway, then you have your determination and willpower online and running.  Expect to *feel* motivated every day and you will likely be disappointed in yourself.  Just do at least your basics even on days when you aren't feeling motivated and try to avoid taking more than a couple of days off a month, and you'll probably be fine.

Music and playing an instrument *are* addictive.  But it is a far more positive addiction than some out there.  Recognize that and make use of it.  The first thing to do is to make it a habit.  Something where it is a part of every day.  The next thing to do is to depend on it.  Play when you are angry, sad, bored, happy, and try to see where it helps with each of those states and whatever else you can think of.  Depressed?  Cool.  Play to make the world go away for a while.  Go through those same stages with alcohol or a substance or something like gambling or porn and you will most likely end up with problems within a few years.  Do it with something like music, though, and it will become such an integral part of your life that you will find time to play and listen every day and you will get to playing better.

Revenge can also be an excellent motivator.  When I was in my teens, I'd sometimes practice/play for hours a day because some people had told me I should just give up.  I got angry enough about it that there was no way I was going to give up and let them be right.  LOL  Years later, when I had gone through a few years where I'd lost some of my fire, I took a class on recording.  I was in my late 30s, and my classmates were fresh out of high school.  Some of them found my age amusing and one said something like "Hey pops.  Aren't you a bit old for this?"  My blood started boiling and I made a mental note of the person and their friends who snickered.. And I smiled and said "Don't call me 'pops'.  My name is Daniel.  Pleased to meet you."  And for the rest of the semester, I made it a point to have fun kicking their butts in any way possible. LOL  Inside of a couple weeks, I'd put together a home project studio adequate to be able to do all the classwork and projects, so I didn't need to worry about getting scheduled studio time.  In fact, I gave nearly all of my scheduled studio time away to those classmates, and was generally pleasant and helpful.  It made kicking their butts all the more fun, and added to my personal quiet amusement when they had to get time extensions for finish projects while I did extra projects just for the hell of it, to make sure they never brought anything to class where I didn't have something better I'd just finished.  LOL  It was great fun.  I bore them no real ill-will, though, I was just getting in some paybacks.  'Revenge' and showing up someone who annoyed you can be good fun as well as a great motivator.  You don't have to be mean or nasty about it, it can be even sweeter if you are supportive and cool.  But it can be very effective, and I recommend working on learning how to use it when someone manages to tick you off.  LOL

Another thing I find useful is to listen to music.  I don't mean just leaving it playing in the background while doing something else.  Actually listen to it, hunt up works by players who can either inspire you or amaze you, put on headphones and put other distractions on hold and just listen.  Try for at least an hour a day, settle for half an hour if it is all you can manage.  But if you aren't a listener, then you shut off one of the easiest ways to get new musical ideas to use, and one of the ways to keep yourself motivated.

I too am guilty of running even before I crawl.  But one of the things that seems to motivate me a lot of the time is someone telling me, "You can't."  But it's not just any old, "Uh, hey man...you can't do that.  Your not good enough yet."  Though a lot of the time it kinda feels that way.  For example on my second day of playing I asked my friend, whose viola I was borrowing, Where the open strings were on an alto clef and if each finger down (all of this in the first hand position) was 1 step up.  She explained it well enough for me to fumble through some sheet music and when she asked me why I wanted to know I told her I was going to play amazing grace. She proceeded to tell me that essentially amazing grace was in kindergarten and that I was only in my second day of pre-school.

The next day I played Amazing grace for her.  Rough? Yes.  Missing Flats/sharps? absolutely (I played every note natural).  Off beat and out of time? Probably.  Did I play the entire song for her front to back without giving up or restarting? Damn Straight.

So, Are there a lot of steps that I have probably glanced over or omitted entirely, like playing scales ever?  Oh yeah.  Am I hoping to work on those aspects now that I have my own Viola Ordered? Absolutely!

:D

I set a big goal year-long to work towards and little achievements to finish along the way. That way, I get a mini victory every time a little achievement is accomplished. The goal for this year is to play Spring like this:

The drama that this is from was super addicting. So is the anime. It's a nice pick me up when I start not wanting to play.

Pikachu:

What an exciting new rendition of the Spring Sonata - your tone is lively and vibrant with many ornamental trills and a super vibrato. However when you forcefully play those repeated sets of four eight notes you are actually accompanying a beautiful piano melody. Let your pianist have a chance to shine while playing that melody.  Excellent job - keep up the good work !!  Theodore

It's an addiction. The more I use it the more I want it. This forum has been one of my biggest motivators. The people and the help have been amazing. Had I stayed at violinist.com I'm sure I would have given up ages ago.

Another motivation is that I want to be good at this one day. No pIece of wood and horse's butt is going to get the better of me. rofl

"Had I stayed at violinist.com I'm sure I would have given up ages ago."

All of the traditional violin sites are dying because there is no place to play an acoustic violin because of the noise.  The useless parasitic pyramid scheme that passes itself off as the financial system only has one purpose it seems:  to pack the dumb slobs like hogs/chickens in a modern feedlot system.  This site is already going to the electric violin and new fangled muzak.  Is that what you really want?  Appears so.

I guess we are just lucky enough to be open minded to all sorts of styles, types of instrument and intellectual standards.

@Composer

Obviously you didn't read my comment in the thread 'Fuse' in the Great Performances topic.

I still haven't seen you post a video of you playing yet. Are you really a player or just a troll. I'm beginning to think the latter.

Why would i post videos of progress in learning the violin when *NOBODY* here actually wants to learn the violin.   Fiddlestix would go batty if i posted videos of Schradieck technic exercises.   All that boring technical stuff would demotivate the "practical" people here who only want to hear fiddle tunes played badly.   I would get nothing but harassment.

No, ferret, i don't believe your Rah rah [waving pom poms] cheerleaders are ever going to help you learn the violin.   The fact is serious violin instructors don't want anything to do with adult learners because 95% of them are in la la pretend land.

@Composer

You are a total bullshitter. You can't play the violin. You are a totally talentless 'wanna be' . Put up or shut up you fake. What? You couldn't take a little flak from @fiddlestix .  Whimp. Don't post a vid of exercises, post one of you actually playing a real tune. You can't can you?

Get real and get a life mate. You are a total 'looser'
