Hello, My name is Sonja. I have wanted to play violin since I was 10. My mom, thought it would be too difficult to learn. I ended up playing the clarinet. Now that I am over 40 and have a child approaching 10, I thought it best to giver her a wide range of musical instruments to choose from. I have a keyboard, guitar, clarinet, flute, harmonic (basic and double w/second harmonic slide), and just recently added the VIOLIN. I have been looking at the youtube site, and saw the amazing videos helping me learn how to play and learn alongside my daughter. I thank you for putting so much effort into helping those of us who cannot or do not afford to pay for lessons. I am hoping to gain enough knowledge and prowess to perform for my family and live my dream that I have had since childhood. Every time I would listen to the orchestra in Chicago, I imagined myself playing. I may not realize that dream now, but at least I can fill my home with beautiful music. I hope to gain much wisdom with your help....Thanks,violin_girl

Welcome, Sonja.

I was looking at your user name, very cool. Are you a librarian, or a bookworm?

You should pick up the violin pretty rapidly, once you figure out some of the physical part of it. I played as a child, then no musical instrument for 36 years and now I have been playing for 3 months or so. I love it, you will too.

Hey Sonja,

Thank you for taking the time to share this. Your post is the reason I keep doing it and enjoy doing it so much. I've been making music my whole life, but the one on one interaction and appreciation of so many people who really want to learn and do their best is a great reward for the little I do.

Glad you appreciate it and glad that you are joining us here on the forum too now.

I learned a new word this morning. PROWESS - skill or expertise in a particular activity or field.

Welcome Sonja, this site is great as you have already figured that out. I have learned more in the last 4 months from this site than I ever did on my own. Fiddlerman's advise is great and so is the advise from so many others on the forum.

Welcome aboard.

Welcome Sonja! This is a great place to learn this beautiful instrument. I got the "violin bug" from my niece. This site has really helped me out a lot. Anyway, WELCOME!!

Thanks everyone for the well wishes. I have been out for the past few days, and am flabbergasted at all the incredible people who replied. Once again thank you. Fiddlerman, I am happy I was able to teach you something.

I have not picked up the violin in about a week. Thinking I need to practice a little more than every now and then and never. I can't learn without practicing.  Have not been making time.  It is strange how a person tends to overlook something, and then remembers how easily it is to forget. I have to start all over again, oof.

Well, we are here to push you and to encourage you.

One good idea is to leave your fiddle out in plain sight to see and practice more often. Play the violin even if just 5-10 minutes several times rather than waiting till you have 1 hour available and end up not playing at all. When you are not used to playing this works better anyway.

Also, I expect you to teach me a new word in all your future posts.wink

Welcome Sonja ... everyone else has said everything I would've said, so just hop right in and enjoy this site, it's amazing.  And the people here are all wonderful too.  You'll find that out for yourself soon enough.

If you think you can, or you think you can't, you're probably right.

Oh  my goodness, how time flies when I am having fun learning the Violin. It has been nearly two month months since I began experiencing the new love of my musical endeavors. To think that  I am challenging myself to excel and then to find that Fiddlerman has also asked me to edify him as well, with a new word in each post I send. Hmmm very sneaky there. dazed

roflol OK, you got me to look up another word though I was pretty sure that I knew what it meant. thumbs-up

Just don't hear the word that often. If you feel like it why don't you give us an example of what you are doing to learn and how that is going for you. exactly
