I was wondering if anyone else here has tinitus and if so how you deal with it when trying to play.  Sometimes I can play without too much background noise but sometimes it gets so loud it's hard to tell if I'm in tune or not.

I have mild problems associated with too much sinus pressure [which also brings on vertigo], but my fiddle is so doggone loud I can't imagine anything drowning it out.

So, sorry, I am no help. frown

Hi Kevin, yup I have a bit of tinnitus.  Also have some hearing loss in the high ranges from eardrum scarring due to repeated ear infections when I was young.  Note to any parents, ear infections may not be a minor thing if you hope your kid will grow up to be a musician.  Sure, being in loud rock/punk bands for many years didn't do my hearing any good either, but that caused considerably less hearing loss than the ear infections did.

My tinnitus is at a high enough pitch that I can usually work around it.  It is just kind of like if there was a small high pitched digital alarm clock constantly going off nearby.  I've learned to mostly ignore it.  Some days it is worse than others. On bad days, digital tuners are a nice invention.

But I would guess that yours may be worse than mine if you have trouble hearing a violin.

Most musicians I know suffer from Tinnitus. Mine comes and goes but especially when I am exposed to loud music. I've started protecting myself with special musicians earplugs. Been doing so for 10 years at least.
Try not to think about it. Seems impossible I know, but the longer you have it the less you will think about it.

Mine is always there but sometimes it gets real bad.  Has to do with damage to my eardrum and medications I take.  Guess I'll just have to deal with it and when it gets real loud use an electronic tuner.
