@Heady -

You mentioned you liked Halling tunes and since I haven't played one, yet (that I know 🥴), I thought we could get more of a discussion going here.

Hope you'll post some of your favorites!

So here's a little general info for everyone, great playing tips & a couple tunes from the 3rd 'Scandi Folk Nerd' video by Emilie Waldken.

About Halling - Emelie Waldken

And I found a video of Vidar Skrede & Matt Brown playing a really nice, "Halling from Bjerkreim".

Matt Brown says:

"Vidar tells me that this tune is after Trygve Thomasson Fuglestad (1902-1982) from Bjerkreim, in Rogaland County in the southwest of Norway."

Halling from Bjerkreim - Vidar Skrede

Much more history on this tune with the video and a link to contact Vidar Skrede if anyone would like to take lessons - I know Vidar would love to have more students.

I had the pleasure of taking Vidar Skrede's virtual workshops at the April 2021 Fiddle Hell.  He is a wonderful teacher and I learned a lot, but not this tune.

Even though Vidar is playing on a Hardanger fiddle in this video - no problem playing it on a standard fiddle, he plays with both.

...haven't tried to play it yet, so I don't know if it's in standard tuning or not.

This is a link to the album lassofolk by early bird string band which is what they were working on in the post I shared that @elcbk mentioned....it has a halling or a track theyve named halling on it along with 13 other tracks    i dont know how many are halling tunes.  maybe someone can check that out and identify which ones are which.  one of the tracks has the name vals so assume its sorta a waltz?  the tune this link is pointing to may or may not be halling ive no idea......its just part of the playlist which will open.  regardless..i like the music.  pretty cool

@ABitRusty -

Wow, I screwed up!

I mistook "Lassofolk" as the name of the tune in the other thread - not the album!

They said at the start of the video "Okay!  Ready?! Halling! (Dance Tune)" - so now I have no clue if all, or just some of the tunes on the "Lassofolk Album" are Halling. 😒

Geez, this is the Halling done by Earlybird Stringband... cause it's called "Halling". 🤪 (deleted my earlier link)

Halling - Earlybird Stringband

This is an unusual Mandolin/guitar version (by mj10008) - LOVE IT!

Ringländer - Halling

Here's a few others I like:

I've mentioned The Nordic Fiddlers Bloc elsewhere - here's a Halling from them (The Folklife Center at Crandall Public Library)!

Halling from Trondheim

A quite different Halling from Jon Faukstad.

Halling from Jon Faukstad

Annbjørg Lien plays a nice Halling!

Halling After Ola Mosafinn

Thought I'd also include a Halling from a little different venue!

The Halling from the "Unravel" videogame - original score by Henrik Oja & Frida Johansson.

Halling efter Per Loof

...think I can safely say, I can now identify a Halling! 🤣

- Emily

Btw, there are some out there that were a little bit hard on my ears. 😖

But, that's just ME.

I like Emelie Waldken’s video –wonderful explanation of Halling.  She has a linked Halling dance of Torkjell Borsheim

 I think they should make this an Olympic event--

@SharonC -

Smiley Broke Apart Smiley

I agree with you!

Seeing the dance helps me understand the structure of the music and why the energy I feel, is needed.

Think all his joints will pay dearly for that dance in about 20 years. 🤭🤫

Cool music, dance and fiddles. LOL
The Hardanger fiddles as well. I've tested some but never really tried to play them per say.
