Ahh... neither Scotland nor Scottish playing.. but a tune from there I believe.  Have a chuckle on me.. espe ially with my soundscapes the 2nd time around.  In all seriousness though, a beautiful tune i cannot play well, but gave it a go.

Beautiful playing, I agree with Emily think you really captured it, couldnt tell you if its Scotland though, believe it or not I have only ever been to Edinburgh and Stirling, never been to the Highlands.

Edinburgh is spectacular, very touristy though obviously. the landscape around Stirling, like something from Lord of the Rings, the highlands really do rise straight from the plain. Have to go to the highlands one day my friend used to go every year.

Great stuff, love your vids. Very atmospheric.

Liked the sound of the water, great touch, for some reason reminded of Banshees of Inisherin, was watching that again the other night.

Cant beat a sunny day

Geeze, @ABitRusty You did it again. My mind just went into this. I was picturing a young bride from a fishing village at the shore waiting for her new husband to come back from a fishing trip when there was, maybe, a storm. Then, it was like other towns people joined in.

You said you could not play it well. I have to beg tp differ! You played it perfectly. How absolutely lovely. Thank you.

Ok, make sure you have some ear plugs. Has issues, but the best of the bunch, I blame it on the mouse playing on the bow.

Thanks, @SharonC I am not comfortable with C. I really don't like playing in C. I like the sound of a C# and F# better than a C note and F note. So, this is very difficult for me. I cringed when playing it. Definitely not a Betty Buckley belting it out on a violin.

I wasn't going to post it. But, hey, it is just a song played by a perpetual student amateur! 😂😂😂

Anyway, your comment means a lot.

@Mouse I’m working on a tune for the party that’s in Am (same key signature as C) – and I thought after a while of practicing it “Why didn’t I change this to Dm (same key signature as F, which I've played a lot of)?”

So, you’re not alone in preferring other keys signatures (like D & G) that are more familiar.  Not just because of hearing it, but also where the left hand prefers to go and what we're more used to seeing on the page.

@Mouse that was pretty darn good... great in fact!  how did you end up playing as far as the sheet music vs by ear went.

@ABitRusty  Thanks.

I have problems playing by ear. I had to use the sheet music. Part of the problem is that I hear it, but I can't transfer that to notes.

In music in 7th grade, the last year we had an official music class, we had to think of the Star Spangled Banner and write the notes on staff paper. There I sat and just about every note was the same note. It is really weird.

The girl next to me had the notes correct. I know the notes aren't all the same note, and can sing it, badly, but to transfer that to sheet music, and apparently an instrument, I can never figure if the note goes up or down, or by how much, and it all gets written or played as one note, or not varied much. It is really weird. I hear it correctly, but I can't transfer the to notes to sheet music or an instrument. At my age, I don't see it happening now, 😂. I think that is part of my problem being able to play more smoothly, not being able to tell if I am flat or sharp.

With this song, I absolutely love and wanted to really play it smoothly, but it is not going to happen. I have to put it aside and move on. I am hearing Betty Buckley too much. I think I am trying too hard, also because I wanted it so much. I think that maybe if I just play as part of my songs I run through all the time, it might get better. If it ever does, I will record it again.

Thanks, again! 😁

@Mouse -

Perfect tune for this Party!

'Memory' is a great tune - worth keeping in repertoire!  It's the kind of tune I'd want to continue growing with, experimenting with expression/dynamics - bow pressure & bow speed changes in those wonderfully loooong, slow, tied notes!

Thanks for sharing this one, Mouse - I enjoyed listening!

About the ease of playing different keys... what octave you choose to play in can make a big difference.  Unfamiliar scales can be auditioned on the violin/viola fingerboard in different octaves.  Also, depending on the octave, a key might be MUCH easier to play if in a slightly different fingerboard position - instead of 1st, try playing in 'half' position, or 2nd position.  One tune (I'm currently playing) is easiest in 1st position when playing in a lower octave/lower strings, but I find 'half' position easiest for playing it in the higher octave/higher strings.

Thanks, @ELCBK I really think this was the perfect lament tune and thought of it immediately.

I am keeping it in my list. It is like Ragland Road, perfect to use for dynamics and bowing, and both are tunes I really like. This one I have to get the intonation improved before I try adding dynamics, the metronome, etc. I wasn't sure about posting becauee it still needs so much work, but it will be a while and this party would have been forgotten by then, so I posted it. I can always share it later, if I succeed.

Thanks, really appreciated you listening.

I have posted a link to Betty Buckley performing this at the 1983 Tony's in my blog, if anyone wants to really hear it. She is definitely lamenting,

Love this party, @stringy.

Okay, folks. Here is Memory from Cats on my Fiddlerman Soloist 15.5 inch viola. I think I am better suited to viola. I have adjust the setup so it is a little more comfortable, 👍.
