Hello, I used to be on this site several years ago, not sure if anyone remembers me.
Anyway, long story short I played the violin in grade school for about 4 or 5 years, stopped, started again.. and so on. I realized I want to play again and this time I am determined to stick to it. My mother passed away this month from cancer. She loved me playing the violin, I want to make her proud. I love playing because it relaxes me and allows me to be creative. I am also inspired by my 9 year old niece who picked up the viola this past year. Soon I will be moving closer to my family in NY and we will be able to play together.
I made this thread (topic) so I can post updates in my progress, feel free to comment on whatever you want.
The violin I have I bought from this site in 2012, I forget what type it was but I know I got it at a cheaper price than it's listed because it had some sort of issue with the varnish, I can't tell though. It's beautiful to me. I will post pics later on when I figure out a way to post them without them taking up the whole screen

Thank you guys
I am just working on pizzicato for right now out of my Essential Elements 2000 Violin Book 1. These books are what I originally learned with so I figure I will start with the basics.
Played a couple pages today, might play some more later. Going to study/refresh myself on the parts of the violin and bow.

Back to using the bow now. One problem I notice is sometimes the bow bounces when I play. I think part of it is from being out of practice, but I know there is a video on here somewhere about that issue

Thanks for the vid/link fiddlerman!
Checking in, have been really busy lately. Just moved back to New York last week and have been settling in.
I haven't gotten a chance to play much at all this month but I am going to begin playing again every day starting tomorrow. I miss it, I really enjoy it.
One thing I did was finally buy a hard case for my violin, like it much better and it doesn't collect cat hair like the soft fabric ones do (my cats shed a lot)
Will update tomorrow!

Day 1 of the challenge. Started working on my G string because for some reason that's the string I'm least familiar with. Practiced songs that used 4th finger D. Looking forward to seeing the progress I make between now and the end of the challenge. I may do a comparison video

Haven't played in over a week, have been in the hospital this whole time. Now that I'm back I'll start playing again today. I'll begin the 35 day challenge again tomorrow since it will be Sunday.

Hi fiddlerman, my main goal is to hopefully be able to play Greensleeves by the end of the challenge, also working on half steps and whole steps

Okay... beware.... this is probably a stupid question that I should know but I can't remember from when I was in school. Why exactly do we have to loosen the bow hairs when we're not playing? Does it cause damage if we don't? I have been forgetting to do it and was just wondering...
