@Fiddlerman: yes, it's an evil circle... one of the main reasons I quit the bar jams long ago was that I was having trouble hearing myself with my 275 watt Crate Acoustic Telluride, and I couldn't find anything else better in a size that would be allowed on stage. Today I traded my humongous Traynor K4 keyboard amp in on a 300 watt Mark Bass amp. roughly cube size, 15"X14"X16" with one heavy duty, advanced technology 12" speaker, and only weighs 30 lbs. It blows the crate out of the water. Significantly more volume, much thicker sound, and nice tone with my barcus berry.
It was quite expensive, even with the trade... but if you wanna play, you gotta pay!

in addition to the blues bar jams, me and the lady singer/stummer went to an open mic at a nearby bar last Friday. We've been jamming together for a couple of years, but she's never been on stage, and just started singing thru a mic and playing an electric acoustic guitar several months ago. She's quite a good singer and an adequate strummer, but very insecure, tends to choke around people she doesn't know. We went to a different house jam a while back. She tried to do a tune but was too nervous. So it took quite a bit of encouragement to get her out to this open mic. I had to convince her that our duo was pretty much just as good as anyone else there, and it's just an open mic and who cares if it doesn't go off without a hitch.
So we did pretty good, a four song set. She went blank on the last tune in the first verse, I just said 'ok take another run at it...and she made it all the way thru that time.
Now that she's done it once, she knows it's do-able, and already smitten by the stage lights. We're going back this Friday with 4 different songs.
She does bluesy/folky stuff which I find very conducive to the way I play, so it's quite enjoyable for me.
