What is an intuitive/analytical player? What are the preconditions for intuitive playing to be successful? When and how should intuitive/analytical playing be used?

I claim that for intuitive playing to sound good on violin, the following conditions have to be fulfilled:

(i) The violinist needs to have a solid basic technique, so that all moves with the bow arm are successful in yielding a good sound. If one has very poor basic movements, randomized movements as in intuitive playing can only sound bad (even if you hit rhythm and intonation correctly and play with some feeling).

(ii) The violinist should not have an extremely clear violin that displays exactly every movement and every slight deviation
from the perfect pitch.

Hey Lena,

I agree that the violinist has to have a great technique to play intuitively, but I think that even technique can be partly intuitive. Another word for intuitive is instinctive. Some people do things in a better way instinctively. Not to say that they can do it without instruction or work, but maybe not need to apply as much effort. A lot of technique is common sense if you analyze other players as well as yourself. With some students, I teach and demonstrate a certain technique only to have them repeat it much better than they had done previously whereas others need a lot of work and deprograming to achieve the same technique. 

As for what type of violin that player would need, I believe that everyone needs the best violin possible and having a more difficult instrument only causes the player to learn bad technique. In other words, if you have a violin that doesn't sound much, you might have to press too hard. You need an instrument that plays easily. As far as what an instrument displays, I am not sure about the differences. Some violins have more open sounds than others and with some you can hear the overtones better, but I always want the fiddle that is the most open and true. This being said, bright and powerful as apposed to only warm and dark.
