Hello everyone!
I am not sure if we started this thread already, but I am starting a current one. I thought we could put some short term violin goals for the first three months of the year. (yes, January is almost gone).
For Toni:
1 month - I'd like to have a tighter schedule for practice, and practice to improve vs. playing. I will be working with online friends and local friends. (pre vibrato practice)
2- month - I am working on a few violin classes that I purchased. I'd like to finish the first five of both series and see improvement (Scales and some basics). I have three songs to play with some light shifting, I'd like to see that become easier for me. (Pre-vibrato practice.) I'd like to see myself join the Street Jelly Jamboree.
3 - Month - More focus on Vibrato, shifting. I'd like to have some vibrato in my Ashokan, Godfather. I'd like to finish learning Hedwig's theme. I hope to have a good rough version of Swan Lake and a good start on Air, Bach. (getting help from Juan)
New members please join in also. Happy Playing!!!!

How about a 90 day goal that will cover the whole three month span. Or is that cheating? lol... Improve bowing patterns, improve intonation and improve (or relax) the death grip...
With relearning some critical posture errors, I seem to be starting all over again, but at least this time I can sight read a lot better.
Keep up the good work everyone!!

Okay, i'm game for this.
Jan: Since January is almost gone i'm going to have my January goals bleed over into the other 2 months. So Maintain the new left hand position i've been working on and try to relax my wrist more. For bowing, keep working through Sevcik's exercises and have a more relaxed and fluid bow movement. Try to get good versions of witches dance and Bourree.
Feb: Properly start shifting work, mostly fifth position and maybe third. Keep a relaxed posture and relaxed hands. Do more scales and arpeggios. Also maybe add some theory work in there to refresh.
March: I'll hopefully need new pieces to play by this point and am hoping to buy the Wohlfahrt studies to reinforce January and February's practice and polish things a bit.

Well, the 35 day challenge said put the goals in 'plane sight', so..
January and February
-Increase left hand and arm flexibility to achieve a better finger position on the strings.
-Focus on bow hold and bowing to keep bow square on the strings.
-Play slow tunes against a drone or tone to practice intonation.
February and March
-Review progress of previous month and aim to develop a small repertoire of two part tunes covering the key of G, D and A.

My goals will be set around performing live or jamming- goodness can't even tape myself playing at this point!! Anyway.
1. Had my first singing lesson. Trying to learn breath control. Sing Teach has me singing Amazing Grace. We play this at Jam.
BREATH - without raising your shoulders to your ears!!
Amazing grace! How sweet the sound BREATH
That saved a wretch like me. BREATH
I once was lost, but now am found, BREATH
Was blind, but now I see. BREATH
I am shocked at how many breathes I take while singing. A bad habit I am now trying to break. Actually it was huge for me to sing in front of her, BUT I did it!! Which might be considered a January goal completed!
2. Get Maiden's Hair under my belt, speed up on Old Joe Clark. Add expression to the waltzes I am learning,
3. Either sing at Jam or tape myself and post it here on the forum. MAYBE!! Whew that sounded better in my head!

I'm not doing the 35 day challenge, since I already know I'd miss 2 days. I allow myself 2 days off a month, and that has worked out ok for.. Well, over a year (I haven't really kept track of how long).
But the next month or two, my current hope is to get more used to running a little vid/audio recorder I bought, and to get a good space set up for doing that sort of take.
3 months will be about the end of April, which will be the beginning of my 4th year on the instrument, and I usually take a week or so to do a self-evaluation and re-vamp my practice strategy.
PS
@Schaick: I recall an interview with the jazz violinist, Regina Carter, where she mentioned breathing. When she started playing violin with jazz bands, as I recall she got put over with the saxophones. She mentioned that one of the sax players pointed out to her that just because she didn't *have* to breathe when playing violin didn't mean that she *should* play like she didn't breathe. She felt that thinking of needing to take breaths while playing violin, as if she were singing or playing a breath-driven instrument, was good for getting her phrasing more natural and for learning to make better use of dynamics.

My next week plan is changing. I'm going to continue to build foundation on scales. I just finished an afternoon jam and the scales are really coming along. The music I make is sluggish but dramatic. Within a week of solid scale practice (a few hours everyday) I will be able to increase the speed and play seriously dramatic music.
I'm practicing scales with positions 1-9 ie shifting to produce dramtic tones while incrementing or decrementing the scale. The music is truelly satisfactory, and I need to increase speed to be able to make serious street money.
FEB:
After I've achieved a desirable speed I need to get back into double stops in order to harmonize the music.

Great goals everyone! You inspire me to write down my own too. I can't compromise myself with a strict pratice due to college work (last year), so I am adding my goals for Feb-Mar all together.
- Focus on my bow hold (break the "motorcycle hand" habit) and my up-bows;
- Progress in my Hans Sitt studies;
- Build confidence again! ( Still working on that after my hiatus)
