I see on Tuesday the 31st you have a rehearsal of Messiah, That is such a great piece of music.
Yes, some of the orchestra members are rehearsing Handel's Messiah. They meet an hour earlier than the rest of us and focus entirely on that piece. However, the did invite me to come in early sit in on the Messiah rehearsal if I would like. It is indeed a wonderful piece of music. They are planning to perform it an annual concert.
Here is a link to some more info and video http://newsymphony.org/messiah.html
As for the rest of the orchestra, next week among other pieces, we will be rehearsing Mahler's "Kindertotenlieder" and Beethhoven's Symphony No. 7. I have already begun looking over the orchestral scores and the violin parts . With some practice, study and some luck perhaps I will be able to scratch out a few more notes than I did last week...LOL.

We have an orchestra that just recently formed but they only take the best players they can find and the auditions were by apointment only. Sometimes it sucks living in the country. I stopped my lessons because the teacher was only playing for a little over a year and I ended up teaching her more than her teaching me. She was a nice kid but I need someone who is going to tell me what to do and tell me that I am doing something wrong. Enough ranting.

We are pretty much in the same boat. I haven't had formal one on one lessons since I was a kid. After that I didn't play much, other than a little fiddling here and there. Only within the past year or so have I gotten back into learning new skills and techniques and improving... thanks for Fiddlerman and other helpful sites. But I am now at a point where I need a good instructor to give me one on one lessons. I am hoping that through the orchestra and the music conservancy I might be able to locate a good teacher in the area.

The faster you can read the music and put your fingers on the right strings they better you'll do. That is my main problem so far. The music is challenging and as I am reading it by the time I have my fingering correct and I'm ready to bow the orchestra is already way ahead of me. So right now it is very hard for me to play along except for perhaps the simplest parts. I am hoping the eventually it will kick in and I'll be able to play along and keep up for longer and longer stretches.

Well, I attended my second rehearsal last night. Did a little better than last week. We played parts of Beethoven's symphony # 7, Shostakovich Waltz # 2, Handel's "Water Music", and Ravel Ma mère l'oye.
I played along reasonably well on Handel... although at one point I was accidentally playing violin 1 part when I am violin 2. Wish we could have spent more time on that piece, managed to get along on parts of Beethoven's #7 (also got lost quite a few times too). I was out of it completely on Shostakovitch but that was because I didn't have the music on my stand. On Ravel everyone was lost but it was the first time the orchestra played that piece.
All in all it was a lot of fun. Yeah, for me its kind of hard but I am really starting to learn and understand things about how orchestral music is arranged and played and I am developing a much deeper appreciation for the art than I ever had before.
It is truly a wonderful and deeply satisfying experience to play along with others. I strongly recommend joining a musical group of some form. Even if you are a beginner and it seems too hard at first it is still a rewarding experience and you will learn a lot and it will help you to become a better musician. Even if you can only contribute a few notes stick with it and it will grow on you and you will get better. You will be glad you did.
