I didn't try hard to play the songs...just sort of whipped them out. Long day and I wanted ONE take. Here is what I got. I was talking to Joseph/819Dragon and I said I would post this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v.....5jUptZnsH8

I thought they both sounded pretty good. It sounds like the Hoffman is more even on the volume it put out on all the strings though.
Do they both have the same type/brand of strings? And was the Mendini set up at a shop or is that how it sounded right out of the box?

Thanks for all the feedback..... I think I play my Hoffman better as it has tapes... The pink one has no tape for guidelines.
I surely like my Hoffman... But I want a Kohr as my upgrade... Reward for vibrato?
Daniel... The Mendini was semi set up... The bridge did slip but the strings were on.. I broke the bridge on the set up. They sent two and two sets of strings. I believe I have overture strings on the pink violin. I have Pro Arte on the Hoffman.
@ Pierre ... I am surprised also. Not only is it pink lacquer ... It has sparkles in it!!!!
That being said I think the Mendini is worth a string upgrade.
@ Naska.... Thanks!

I think Terry might be on to something. I also kind of wonder how many people might have preferred the Mendini if they hadn't known which was which ahead of time. LOL
But hey, if you feel the tapes help, why not ask your teacher to put tapes on the Mendini for you? Just tell her you want to stash it at the office to practice a bit on lunch break and that you'd rather not risk the rental for that.
I don't know as I'd go so far as to say the Mendini is better than the Hoffman. But it is not terrible sounding, either. Maybe the sparkles even help! LOL
One thing you might do would be to ask the fiddlers on the forum for a recommendation on strings and setup and use the Mendini when you are working on fiddle tunes like Cabbages. If I recall right, some fiddle players prefer steel or steel core strings and probably slightly different action or setup to get the sound. I don't know for sure on violin/fiddle, but I know that on guitar I prefer a different action and strings for rock than I do for folk, for example. It just makes some things easier for getting the right sounds.
