wow, very educational. With the time difference I'm headed off to figure out when I should tune in to watch.

Here's the link to the order of performance. It's just getting started!

I don't understand why all piano player's get to use sheet music and the violinist doesn't. That's not fair.

Well Fiddlestix, the violinists are competing and not the pianists.

Truth is that most of these pianists barely look at these parts. They are almost site reading the parts. They might have learned the parts sometime in their lives or spent some hours before the competition to brush it up. The guys (or girls) that get these jobs are incredible site readers. We hired these type of pianists for auditions with our orchestras. I know many great pianists and how they work.

The violinists on the other hand have been working on perfecting the pieces both musically and technically. If they haven't memorized the part by now they shouldn't be playing it. :-)

I never learned to memorize music pieces (only those I wanted to). My nephew who is a pianist, he has good ear -- he could play a piece by hearing it, but he learns to read music as well; he is incredibly good at both. however, for all the pieces he has played he has them memorized. He would have music pieces sit infront of them but simply plays from memory. He probably stores thousands of songs in his memory. We were amazed how much he could remember! For him, the music is probably just a decoration or take a peek when he needs to.

But I don't think this is a competetion, it's just a recital from what I can tell.  And all a recital is, is a public progress report that just happen's to entertain people at the same time.

Sorry, I misread. Thought that someone had written competition. LOL

Still, the violinists spend a lot of time on these pieces at least the first time around learning them.
