@kim-d Thanks And that should be fun to learn, I love movie themes and have a few I'd like to learn
I record a lot of my practice sessions so I can can look at and hear what I'm doing wrong, lol. So don't be afraid to record yourself, even if you don't intend on the video being posted
I find it's a good learning tool.
Have fun! And I look forward to when you get brave enough to post a video

Thanks I enjoy it even when it's frustrating me, I like the challenge
I did a little recording of where I'm at with Harvest Home, it's not great yet, and I flubbed the ending on this take, but oh well. I need to start practicing with a metronome.
I also need to make a change with my shoulder rest. Keeping it as high as it needs to be comfortable wears out the threads in the plastic, and it keeps falling off my violin. I'm keeping it lower so the screw stays in, but it's hurting my neck now. So I need to get some night back into it.
ok, enough rambling, here's my learning phase video of Harvest Home.

Lol, yes, I was drawn into the trap, lol. I've been working in adding some more flourishes to it, but I'm feeling pretty comfortable with it overall now. I was noodling around with it while I waited for my teacher today, so she brought her guitar out to play along with me, so that was fun. It made up for how stupid I felt in class last week, lol.

I posted this in the Harvest Home thread, but throwing it in here, too.
I am squeaking away on my new Ming 905 Yay
(Wayne's World "we're not worthy!" goes through my head while trying to play it, lol) It just arrived today, and is my new best friend, lol.

@fiddlestix Thanks This was such a fun song to learn. I still have some places in it to clean up, but I'm happy with where I've gotten with it. I didn't think I'd be able to play it at all, lol.
The Ming sounds so much better in person, I really wasn't sure what kind of a difference to expect, though I knew the tone would be different than my Concert violin, but it's even better than I hoped

Yes, like I mentioned somewhere else, you've "pretty much nailed" it ( and not darned bad at all for how short a time you've been playing - very well done !!!! ). I have done some further work on this one as well, and I'll eventually get round to posting it in @Georganne 's thread since it was she that got us into this mess !!!!! Hahahah !
Ohhh.... a new fiddle - in fact I shouldn't call it that really - an MJZ violin - oh boy - oh boy - OK - I'll just leave it at that.... oh YEAHHHH !!! That IS indeed a fine friend to have ! ( Green with envy.... LOL ! )
I seriously recommend not copying my mistakes. D'oh -
Please make your own, different mistakes, and help us all learn :-)

@BillyG Thanks When I started working on some of the different slurs, mainly the ones in the the B part, it felt like I was learning it all over again, and I still am not totally comfortable with them. After my class last week I bought the Complete Irish Fiddle music book by Pete Cooper, and it has a lot of good tips in there. I started working on Jackie Tar out of the book last night, in hopes that it can be what I use for the Pirate thread
I know I am not worthy of playing the Ming, if it had eyes it would have been rolling them at me trying to play it lol, but I really wanted whatever I bought next to be my final violin, and I think this fits the bill If I buy anything else after this, it will be some cheap antique fiddle, because playing on one that was played by people a long time ago intrigues me, lol.

Oh my I think you're a prodigy! (<-that's meant in a good way
)
You've pretty much nailed it and you haven't even been playing all that long! I'm still stumbling in some places. (I'd make a video and share it, but I'm too scared, lol)

I actually eye-balled that book a couple of days ago, but I wasn't sure if it's worth the $25.
(Now you got two people green with envy, lol violin and ability envious here, lol)
It's easy to play any musical instrument: all you have to do is touch the right key at the right time and the instrument will play itself. Johann S.Bach

Aw, thanks @AnnyJ
For the book, I only bought it this past Monday after class so have only skimmed through it and focused on Harvest Home and Jackie Tar, but my teacher recommends it. She said she bought it many years ago and still uses a lot of the tips given in there. Part of the high price is I think because it comes with two CDs of all the songs in the book, and some of the exercises as well. I find that helpful because it saves me time searching on youtube, lol... which I still do because the cd is all the slower versions, and I like to hear how various people play the song, but to learn and play along with it, I find the CDs helpful. Maybe a library would have it to check out before spending the money?

Mandy,
I too am envious of your Ming, it is lovely. I just read through your posts and your progress is awesome, great job. You had a great comment about shooting videos and analysing/watching yourself even if we don't post them, and I think I will try that (they may never see the light of day but they will help me!).
Keep it up, good job!

Thanks, @intrepidgirl
Videos help me so much, most of mine end up deleted off my phone, except for a couple I save here and there. I like that I can sit back and watch if my left wrist is bending weird (it does a little bit when I move to the E string, I have to constantly remind myself to swing my elbow a little and leave my wrist alone, lol), watch my bowing, and that I can step away from the violin and listen to my notes. Sometimes being right up against the violin I get used to the sour notes, not as much as I used to, but I do. Listening to the recordings I can always hear where I am going wrong so that I know what to work on.

I've made several videos of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. I can't seem to get through the entire song without long hesitations. I'm still having to think of the notes on the paper. I see where FM wrote out the string and finger position, but I'm really trying to identify and play the notes without FM's helpful hints. Some of the videos I just start laughing at myself. Hopefully another week and I will have an okay video that folks can critique.

@kim-d I made the mistake of learning Harvest Home without sheet music, just watching some videos on youtube, and writing down what I saw or heard them doing, so when my teacher pulled out the book I had to just pretend I knew where we were on the page, lol. I made sure to learn the sheet music when I got home from that class.... Oh, and I still have the videos from my first couple days of playing.... those may never see the light of day, but I hang on to them because they make me laugh, lol.
@Fiddlerman Thank you That means a lot. My teacher wants me to check out some local fiddle jam session groups, which I'm not ready for, but would be neat to check out, and I'm sure would be a good learning experience just to watch and listen.
And yes, I love hearing the warmer tones, the way it rings when the note is just right (the A on the E string really sings loud lol) and also just the different feel of the instrument. While I practice I keep both violins out and go back and forth between them, play one song through on the Ming, then the same song on the Concert violin, I love hearing the differences.

I still have to make a video at my attempt to learn the Irish Washerwoman, but am excited because my teacher has moved me on to start learning how to do vibrato, I thought I wouldn't start that for a while (I'm not sure when you're supposed to start, but in my head I thought it would be a while, lol).
Also, it finally registered in my head how to roll my hand the way she was trying to teach me to make my stubby little pinky finger reach its mark. So yay
