Ha, Dennis, you are such a bully lol. We're too scared NOT to post a video.
I'm doing another fiddle tune practice later to see if I can drum up some proper abuse lol

I am amazed at how old people of my age are.....

cdennyb..... maybe i'm not clear on the practice video thing. Are the video's to be playing scales or practicing a song you may be working on ?

Can you be a little more specific, please .    dunno    I'm thinking that both video's I submitted were in the wrong place.

Awwwwww... go ahead, Naska. Say anything you want.dancing

Hurray! I have a permission from Fiddlestix, so i can comment on his videos =) devil

@Fiddlestix: I like your left hand fingers - they are close to the strings thumbs-up And your intonation as for me is good. =)

Right hand: a little stiffy fingers on the bow. If You could relax them a bit - it would be great for bowing and bouncing reducing. Also sometimes happends that You lift the bow and put it back without a necessary and it starts to bounce. If You lift the bow, then try to put it back first and then pull. Not at the same time. First put - then pull =) It will work more smoothly! coffee

Thanks, Naska:  I appreciate your advice, that's what i'm trying to overcome is the bouncing. I didn't notice it being all that bouncy, but I think I get it when I finish with a down bow or up bow and i'm out of time with the up and down sequence/rythmn.

Thankyou so much for commenting.      dancing   I have terrible recording equiptment also. Just using a webcam and the audio is toooooooo ...... shrill.

I know that's not my problem though.   cry

Ahhhh.... I see what you mean about my right hand, my pinky is a bit stiff. I did that on purpose to see if I could eliviate the bouncy bow by keeping my pinky on top of the bow. Evidentaly it's not good that way.

Thanks again, Mad.thumbs-up I got it.

Hey, it's all good. I intended it to be kinda of a warm up thing... what you do BEFORE you break out the sheet music but it appears the class here doesn't follow a structured lesson plan and just starts up playing the object of learning.

What you play to loosen up and warm up the fingers and hand(s) is sometimes critical before actually putting to mind the notes on the paper, at least for me it is.

I find myself stumbliong and missing notes even though I KNOW where to mput my fingers, they dont always go there, and running scales, etc. helps the fingers to know what they're doing in the next few minutes if you get my meaning.

I think it's great everyone is posting some vids...gives us other members something to think about.

Thanks for the contributions! dancingthumbs-up

Should practicing vibrato make my bicep and forearm hurt? Not to mention my fingers and neck.
I can cure the neck by wedging my scroll up against the wall.
(can you imagine that in a concert? All the violinists running over to a wall to do vibrato, lol)

I'm trying to take a vid of me practicing but keep

I'm chuckling reading this Terry.  I think vibrato is the red herring of learning violin.  It's hysterical to sit back.. And be able to laugh at yourself.

Let us know how it goes brother.

LOL Dennis!! If I were a "structured lesson plan" kinda gal, I wouldn't be teaching myself off of the internet!tongue Honestly, I make a terrible student because it is too hard to tell me anything... I don't just blindly believe the teacher duncecap

I for one would love to see that video Terry. Permission to laugh as much as you want, too. exactly

Ughh - I decided to try Angeline Baker today, but the drones elude me. dazed

I also figured out how to do a video on my new Galaxy5, so y'all can suffer along. dancing BTW I had to prop it in the window so there is a bit of wind noise - sorry!

This is the first time I have wandered off from Ode to Joy and He's a Pirate. I think I will definitely add this song to my practice repertoire... If I can ever figure out how to play two strings at once! [on purpose, that is] I am only working on the first phrase in the video - trying to focus on bowing two strings at once.

I love the look of concentration on your face.
Isn't it hard with no chinrest or shoulder rest? Sometimes it looks like the violin moves and rocks on its own. Still, many old fiddlers used no shoulder and chin rest so it definitely is possible, and if it's your grandpa's fiddle it might have its own spirit and want you to play it exactly the same way.
Whichever way, keep posting Dionysia, you are a breath of fresh air.

Actually, there is a chin rest, but it is not very comfortable. I usually have a piece of non-slip shelf liner on my shoulder to keep the fiddle stable, but I had to use it to keep my cam from slipping. One of these days I'll get a decent setup for doing vids.

I'm with Terry.

Do You feel comfortable, Dyonisia? I saw, fiddler's fiddle hold =) and if You feel comfortable - it's ok, but when You'll play faster pieces, your bow hold might be kind of trouble for fast string crossing or any other fast things dunno

Actually that was something that did not bother me. You actually looked comfortable that way. You don't appear to be tense in your neck by any means. I want to work on your bow grip to begin with.
Have you ever tried my grip from this page:
https://fiddlerman.com/fiddle-.....o-i-start/
It will help you greatly later on to work on this grip. Will help you play smoother bow changes, be more flexible, and play softer at the frog if necessary. Your right hand pinky should rest on the stick.
Anyway, it was fun to watch. Thanks for the post.

I just watched that video dionysia and the first thing I noticed was the way you hold the bow. Ya need to think about how to control and balance the bow to play soft or hard and from string to string. Ya need to get that pinky to curve and stay on top of the bow to balance it to strum those notes... It's great to use your own style but I suggest to really go through FMs free lessons and you can learn real quick. I also think you need to really focus on keeping your playing fingers as close to the neck as possible...jimi-hendrix

And Dennis, out side of monster movies Up In Smoke is one of my Favs! I still have Cheech and Chong records before they started doing all of their movies ;-)

Dionysia we sound exactly the same when we practice LOL, watching your video was like hearing my own violin, maybe yours is its twin? The video quality was quite fine, Galaxy 5 is a cellphone right?
