soprano ukulele as a violin/mandolin for rehearsing
In this video I am playin How Great Thou Art on my soprano ukulele. I have it strung with Aquila AQ-30 strings in fifths, to enable it to play like a mandolin or violin.

I have been using this ukulele for years to rehearse in places where it would be awkward or too loud to use my mandolin or violin.

The fingerboard is exactly the same size as the mandolin and violin.  The main difference for the violin is that you have to place your fingers where the frets would be, since the violin is a fretless instrument.

It is very easy on the fingers and I sit on the couch and quietly strum, without bothering anyone because it's so nice and quiet. I'm pretty sure the same applies to the violin. If I started playing my violin (especially unmuted) while my family was trying to watch tv, they'd be rather upset, so this works great for me.  And as you can see in the video, it works pretty well.

For some reason this video won't play by just clicking the play button. It will play if you click watch on youtube.  I will try to fix this later, if I can...

@Paul C -

Really nice!

I think it's a great idea to practice on a Uke tuned like violin!

First saw someone recommend it a couple years ago - perfect for traveling.

If you prefer frets, did you know they make them for violin?

Thank you Emily!

I also like the uke because its cheap.  If I go camping or to the beach I don't mind bringing it along and just throwing it under the back seat.  An acoustic guitar is a little more of a handful for stuff like that.  If someone stole my $65 gretch ukulele, it 's not a big deal. Lots of reasons why it's cool.

I don't prefer frets, I just heve little experience with fretless instruments.
I used to have a 3/4 standup bass that I could play pretty well, in spite of the horrible action. I like the fretless sound for bass.

Sounds good Paul, I had wondered about tuning a Uke like a mandolin but never looked into it, thanks for the information I'll most likely get me a set of strings and mess around with it.

Thank you for posting the video and the string information.

@Paul C  Nice playing--tuning the uke in 5ths seems to work really well--

Thank you Sharon. It's no replacement but it can be a nice tool.
