Oh.. I adored the movie. I just adored it. It was dramatic and intense. I thought David made a lovely Paganini. I am listening/ watching it again this am. (headphones at my desk).... Oh I love love love it. I won't even try to compare points on historical accuracy. It was just so so so good for me.

Here Pink and I have to disagree.
I thought that the movie make Paganini out to be a drug creased sex addict that fail in everything he did. Other the Garretts playing this movie was a waste of 2 hours, and I'm more then glad that I didn't pay to see it. IMHO
With violins there is no fretting over the music.

Old Ogre I can appreciate that view and your review.
SPOILER ALERT!!! below !!!
While I was surprised about the drugs and gambling, I did not think it would be unusual for the time for an artist to be caught in many vices.. especially a genius. It did not spoil my thrill and love for the movie. Perhaps I was not thinking Paganini the whole time. I felt was just watching a movie about a man, a violinist, an artist, and genius.
Again... I was mesmerized and watched it twice.. and would watch again. I loved the harbor scene, the Opera Scenes and all of the other scenery.
I would not say David Garrett is a great actor. But I also feel he might have had some personal insight into the life of a "Rock" star violinist, the down falls, the joys etc. I feel he was able to put some of that emotion or angst into the movie.
At his last concert here in California, David Garrett talked about not having a girl friend and how he went down the list calling all of his girl friends and the funny reactions he got. Maybe that was just part of the show, but it seemed to me that he had a long list of ex's. ha ha
Anyway.. I digress. I could chatter on about the movie forever.

I really enjoyed that > dude was like Elvis, MJ, Hendrix in that time period. David did an excellent job portraying > What was that that stuff that Paganini kept drinking to relax him? > I also noticed how important scales were > how Paganini would start off with scales and just run with it. >>> SWEET!!! > SWEET SHARE!!!

Well, it was a good movie, and as has been said, not a historical documentary.
The gambling, drugs and womanizing are pretty well known of Paganini. He was a bit older than this movie showed when he died, he was almost 60. So his bad habits didn't catch up to him quite so fast.
I had some concerns before seeing the film, since from the title and etc, I assumed it would be far more about the "deal with the devil" legend relating to Paganini. I was delighted to note that the apparent "devil" character, Urbani, actually didn't use any obviously supernatural abilities at any time. He could have simply been an effective and innovative manager/promoter.
Particularly liked the bit where he said he wasn't the devil.. that he served the devil..and that Paganini was his master. LOL
Paganini was devil enough for any manager, I am sure! LOL
