Ok you need to watch this.   Ive searched the forum to see if someone has shared already.   If you did I apologize for a duplicate post.  Link your topic here if you want.

I use Notion 6 for its integration with studio one.  Its great.  But this is something different in that a picture can be played, transposed, and with a subscription exported to pdf or midi.  I tested it by taking a snapshot of my phone screen with The Kesh Jig displayed on the screen.   playscore imported the photo and i was able to play it and change the instrument to violin no problem.   I havent tried multiple pages or exporting because I havent bought the subscription yet.

@ABitRusty -

OMG - that's amazingly accurate!

This should be a HUGE help for people learning Classical sheet music! 🤗

You just made ALL my obscure folk music tune books very enticing, indeed!  ...unless, like some of the trad Irish music we've found, it isn't notated very well. (lol)  BUT, on the positive side, I feel it's much easier to hear, than see in notation where notes/rhythm might need to be adjusted.

GREAT FIND - thanks for sharing this! 🥰

what I really think is the biggest plus is that i can bypass manually entering notation.   I can take a photo and export into notion as midi.  Sorta the same way from midi or xml from the session.   But there are alot of times that a basic version of a tune is found and then we may change a few measures or notate out slurs and such.   To share with everyone thats done manually with a mouse and keyboard.   This opens up the possibility of doing it on the fly in a class or lesson... leaving the paperwork behind.

@ABitRusty  Wow—this looks great. If the looping function works well, I can see myself using that a lot.  The one I use in Musescore playback version on my tablet when I practice can be glitchy, and I sometimes end up getting frustrated with it, wasting my practice time.

Also, getting it into Musescore where I can edit it would be excellent.  Again, if it works as well as the video above demonstrates, I’d use it a lot.

I think I'll give this a try this week. The subscription fee seems reasonable, particularly because of the time I spend now on manual input.

Thanks for letting us know about this--smile

i went ahead and got a year @SharonC.   works well.  im not sure about how well the midi is gonna work like id hoped though.   i didnt experiment much but the 1 track i exported into notion didnt get the notes quite right and im not sure if its playscore or notion.   taking a picture and it playing the notes is amazing though.  ill update if i figure a ything more out.

so far im not having much luck exporting to midi.   And I havent tried hand notated scores yet.  I also havent figured out how to export to a pdf which I was under the impression It could.  May try and open the midi in musescore and see if it does better.

Another issue Im having is it missing some repeats. Instead of say going back to measure 1 on a 1st repeat it plays on through 1st repeat..2nd then on to the next section

Its also missed a key signature a couple of times until it got to the second line then it swapped to correct one.

Im thinking at this point it has something to do with the lighting and maybe angle of photo and user error vs software.  not really fair to point out problems without a response from their support...it still is amazing that it can do what it can.  i think i just need to learn how to fly it..  😉

The more i have tried to use playscore, the more I realized I was trying to make it do something I dont think it was designed for.  Playing a score from a snapshot is amazing, when the lighting and angle is PERFECT.  its very particular which is understandable.

So I decided Notion will be software to use for musicxml and midi IMPORTS.  Its what ill use to rearrange a small piece of music.  Its what ill use to convert live playing to notation.

But that still left me with needing something to store and arrange/group digital sheet music for ipad.

searched on here and @mouse hqd a post about using forscore on her ipad.

THIS is what i was looking for.  granted it took me a bit to figure out how to combine individual photos or pdf's of sheet music into 1 setlist i could swipe to the next page through.  But it works.   Its also allows you to sorta cleanup the photo sorta like using white out on paper..  Theres "stamps" so I can erase a section and stamp new notes on.   Its a bit clunky but functions.

so Forscore for digitizing paper sheet music, Notion for more specific arranging or correcting/changing music.

playscore has a place and maybe i still just dont understand all it can do...but got tired of trying to fit it into what i was trying to do.

@ABitRusty -

Really appreciate you took the time to evaluate/review this App so well!

Ultimately, my decision to learn a piece of music depends on how it sounds.

I admit to owning different genre tune books I haven't touched, because either it didn't come with any recordings, or I haven't see a YouTube video that enticed me to search for a score in it.  Busy lately, but at some point I want to have a better understanding of all the music in my books.

I think a lot of Classical music is difficult to learn even with all it's helpful notation.  This App will be great, especially for beginners - it will help verify intonation as well as help correct rhythm & phrasing problems EARLY in the learning process!

THANK YOU!

- Emily

as long as you have a really good photo it does good.  Im going to still use it..just not the way i had intially intended.  Even without the best photo it can give a head start for a sheet music to musicXML conversion.

@ABitRusty  I've downloaded the app, & tried it out.  I agree with you—the snapshot functions works really well.  Thanks again for finding it—I will be using it, primarily with multi-part pieces that I’ll import in a .pdf for playback.

I decided to record some of my experience with it, thinking I didn’t want to type everything.  Now that I recorded it, I wished I had just typed it up smile Anyway, here it is.

@SharonC very good demonstration of what it can do.   What you used it for concerning your instructors sheet music is the kind of thing id use it for.  in your case I can see that being a big time saver.   larger scores can be a pain to notate.   simple 32 bar tunes arent that big of a deal, but something like you had in the video would make it worth while to use playscore and get a foundation.. from that correct whatever it didnt bring over 100%

I cant see using it to play along with, although it would be handy to get an unknown melody quickly before playing it.

btw... the session just added a loop function, so a tune can just keep looping.   hoping they end up adding sections to that so one could select a start and end point and loop just that range.

@ELCBK  @ABitRusty  Thanks!

@ABitRusty  I do use it for play along--I'm used to using Musescore playback for playalong (particularily for multiple parts stuff, duets & quartets) and it's similar.

It didn't mention it, but it does have a loop function--it activates a little easier than the Musescore one.  However, I haven't been able to get it to do a large number of measures--when I activate the starting measure and have to scroll down to measures that are not displayed to turn on the last measure, it turns off the starting measure--might just be a learning curve for me.  I usually use the loop on small sections to practice, anyway (as opposed to looping the whole piece).

@ABitRusty -

Thank you for reminding me about this App!

Think I might've originally waited because of the few issues Sharon experienced, but I have read they fixed a few things.

Hadn't considered the possibility of isolating a part in a muliple-part score (by muting all the lines you don't want to hear play) - think THAT is also VERY handy.

AND, I didn't realize this could be invaluable - just for ease of transposing, alone!

Found out a little more.

I see it's important to enable 'reading text' for the app to pick up anything more than the notes - sections can be looped... and swing can be added!

The free version only reads/plays up to 1 page of 2 staves.

If you want to read/play unlimited staves, multiple pages - need the Productivity Subscription ($5.99/mo, $29.99/yr - last year's cost).

If you want to be able to import PDF & export Music XML to use with DAW - need the Professional Subscription ($6.99/mo, $39.99/yr - last year's cost).

Haven't checked current prices.

...from what I understand, the iOS, Android & Windows apps are all separate - so I haven't decided if I want to pay for a subscription for my phone, or my laptop.

As an afterthought, was wondering if Playscore 2 could move notation between clefs - since it can transpose...

I found a Violist that reviewed Playscore 2 & she talked about this.   Besides needing the Professional Subscription, I'd STILL need to edit it elsewhere - like my PreSonus Notion Mobile.

Except, I don't find it easy to transpose Viola from Violin scores in Notion.

I took a look at ScanScore 3, which seems to make this MUCH easier (the new feature at 1:26).  It's not only an optical score scanner, but also a complete score editor.

Their Professional version is almost twice as expensive!  ...might do just fine with their 'Ensemble' ($39.99/yr) - will check out the free trial, later.

...I'm sure all these apps will continue to improve.

what i would like is to be able to scan a sheet of music and instead of the file on my ipad being in pdf format..have it in notion..or whatever notation software.  i know how to notate sheet music in notion.. im pretty good at it .. but id just rather scan and be done.  Maybe scan score can do that.  havent used it yet..  will give a try later.  thanks for making me aware of it and the video.
