Hi guys, I've had this idea rolling around for quite a while, and I have a piano score for this music, so I thought it'd be fairly straightforward to create a score for 4 violins.

I'm using Finale v2012.r3 (I think), and I'm fine with creating different parts but I've got a few issues with fine tuning.  If anyone here is comfortable with this program can they please throw some assistance my way?

In particular, I'm baffled with dynamics.  I have the expression tool, but it doesn't let me, for example, put in pp or mp.  I just can't figure how to do it.

The other problem I have is creating first and second endings.  I know how to do it, and it's fine as long as there's only one bar in the first ending.  So how do I make it go for 6 bars?

Anyway, this is in the very early stages, I've only done 34 bars, but I'll try to attach the pdf here for you to check out.  Anyone wishes, I may be able to put in the finale files so you can hear the harmonies.  Don't forget, I haven't marked the beginning of the first ending (don't know how).

Later ... I've deleted that first attempt because I've edited it quite a bit.  I'll re-post it later if there's interest in the project.

Ok, I've found the user guide, and I might just get my answers there.  It's not particularly user friendly though, and some of it just confuses me more.

But I'm getting better.

I forgot earlier all about producing the final result, so I'm hoping someone will take that on for me.

I was also concerned about copyright laws, but a youtube search has exposed lots of string quartets with the same song, even including their own arrangements.  So I'm hoping all will be well there too.

If you think you can, or you think you can't, you're probably right.

As long as you give proper credit you are fine with your own arrangement. I hope this leads to a group project, I love this song!

Can you send me the finale file. I'll make some of the things you want on it and tell you how I do it. Maybe also mark up the pdf and scan it and send that file. I will send you my email if you want me to help you.

Just saw this post. I am very familiar with Finale 2012 in case you can't figure something out even after looking it up and with Kevins help. :-)

Thanks Pierre ... I'm still wondering if I've bitten off more than I can chew.  But for now I'm enjoying the challenge.

Have no fear, I'll certainly be sending you the file at some stage for your input.

This is helping me learn the program as well, but it's a very challenging song, so I'm not sure if it will end up being playable.  We'll see.

Thanks again, and to everyone who's offered to help.  I'll probably need it all.

Well I've finished the score, I'll send it off to Pierre and Kevin ... thanks again guys, any input gratefully accepted.

I'll put the midi here for a listen if anyone's interested.

It may be an epic project in the end, so I'll leave deadlines etc in the air for now.

It's going to be a great project. I hope many participate.
I've always loved "Queen" and this is probably the best choice for a Queen group project. Possibly, "We will Rock You" too but their are far less harmonies in that one.

Ok here's the melody with click ...

Sorry about the quality of the synthesised violins and the annoying piano click.

Many thanks to Kevin and Pierre for all the help with this one.

exactly

When I manage to transpose Finale files into pdf's, I'll post them too (still having problems with that).

There are some intriguing rhythms, but I know of members who'll have no difficulties (you know who you are!)

I'll probably just print from Finale and scan as pdf, that's probably easiest from my point of view.

Choose print directly from Finale but instead of printing, choose save as PDF. At least with the Mac that works perfectly.

Ok I've done the pdf files, but they're not perfect.

The notation at the beginning should read 'Slowly = 70'

Let's do "Queen" some justice. It's a great piece for sure.
BTW, I don't see the PDF's anywhere.

I can see them Robyn,

I usually work from an Admin Post Bag and thought that you hadn't posted them yet.

Aloha Robyn,

I know I'm waaaaay late to your project, but I just heard about it today.  I use a Mac and use MuseScore when I re/write sheet music.  They have versions that work on Mac, Windows, and Linux.  You should give it a shot - the best part is that it's FREE!  It's a bit less cumbersome that Finale, but it has its own learning curve.  Of course, you can avail yourself of the tutorial videos they have on their site as well.  Of course, you can also save to .pdf or their own proprietary format.

Send me what you have and I'll see if I can work on it as well.  I just need to know how you're dividing up the work for all four violins.

Aloha again Robyn,

I did it again - read the first post and skip to the last :D  Anyway, I'm pleased to see that you were able to covert the sheet music to .pdf format for all four violins.  If you should need any help along these lines in the future, please do not hesitate to ask.

Hi iBud ... thanks for your comments.  I actually lost Finale after the project was posted due to hard drive failure, and I've used MuseScore ever since.  I found when I had problems when I first started with it that there's an excellent online support forum, and my questions were immediately answered.  So now I use it exclusively, though haven't done much in a while.

Therefore, a big thumbs down to Finale and it's expense.

I've just given up on this project going anywhere due to lack of interest.  I'm not blaming anyone, because it's not an easy one to do, but perhaps it should be simplified a little more.  I can't do most of it myself, but I really wanted it to take off.

It's not a problem for me, I'm not insulted or anything because people think it's too hard.  I think it's too hard.  But if anyone wants to get it off the ground, I'll also try to get involved.

Cheers and thanks for support.

If you think you can, or you think you can't, you're probably right.
