Only 10 days until St. Patrick's Day 2016...time for some fiddlin' and wearin' o' the green. Rosin up your bow and join in the fun by posting a video or audio of yourself playing a tune from the Emerald Isle.

I'll start by posting my tune from last year's St. Paddy's Day party: this is me playing Black Velvet Band on fiddle, guitar, mandolin and penny whistle.

I'll come up with a new tune to post in the near future.

Who's next?

When the work's all done and the sun's settin' low,

I pull out my fiddle and I rosin up the bow.

Wow, It;s been a year since I received my Fiddlerman Master's Viola. I will have to make a new video of the same song I played last year when I pulled the viola out of the box...

And for any new folks, the party idea is for everyone to have fun by playing and enjoying tunes that relate to the given theme -- in this case it's St. Patrick's Day and Irish tunes.

This is not a critique thread, though if you want feedback, say so. Either way, there's no pressure...your performance doesn't have to be perfect. Any Irish tune that you've been working on will do. It can be video or audio-only. Just have fun.

Also, feel free to share videos of performances by others (professionals, et al.) that relate to the theme, which you particularly enjoy.

Oh how I love this.  I keep playing it over and over.  I'm going to try to play this on my hammer dulcimer, piano, and violin.  Now I have to figure out how to record it all.  Thank you so much.

I hope I can speed up my playing soon.  I tried in the video, not there yet. Not playing a smooth fast - tempos uneven in the song.  UUGGHH!! Well I am faster then a year ago.

I am taking a few Irish fiddle lessons at the end of the month.  YAY!!

schaick ,

Swallowtail Jig is a great tune! It's one of the tunes for my son's fiddle group class, but he hasn't learned it yet, so I haven't started working on it yet either.

Thanks for sharing,

@schaick - yayyy !   Hahaha I have a love-hate relationship with that tune - I can never quite decide on the bowing style - besides - it just wants to "run away from me" (message to self - Bill, use a metronome LOL) - well done !

In another spooky coincidence, I've just downloaded the dots for that as well! Started working on it yesterday.

I'm struggling with the bowing too - I think I'm going to go for slurring the first two quavers in each three and bowing the third. Mostly.

LOL @Jim Dunleavy - I switch between 3 ways - 100% total bow direction change (that trips me up), slurring all 3-note runs, and the final one, which I don't really know the name of the technique for - is "like a slur" but "drawing out an accent" by continual bow pressure changes - index finger on bow hand -

It's "sort of" like to this (but only vaguely !!!)...

Thanks!

LOL!! Maybe I should think about my bowing!?!  I have no idea what I do.  I have noticed at jam bowing sort of blanks out of my mind.

I do know that I play faster and smoother when my eyes are closed, but then I worry about hitting the bridge so I open my eyes!

I think closing your eyes allows you to get into the music.

Perhaps if we, the members of the forum could see you in your videos, may be able to help with your bowing problem. I can understand being cam shy, but it's hard to help if we can only hear you.

and don't worry too much about speed, it will come in  time.

Nice job, @Schaick ! Thanks for coming to the party!

I love the Swallowtail Jig and enjoy playing it, though I'm not happy with my rhythm...it just doesn't sound/feel the same as the way I hear others play it.

OK, we need some more tunes to keep this party going!

I had hoped to record a new one today, but ran out of time. Maybe tomorrow night, or at least in the next few days.

Happy St. Patrick's Day Week!

Some of you might be interested in Star of the County Down.  Fun and really easy.  I'll post the music for it too.

Great job @Schaick !

I'll have to see if I can throw something in there. I can't play anything without mistakes though, lol especially since I 'hibernated' for a while during the winter and have practiced only occasionally for the last few months, life just keeps getting in the way these daysfrown

It's easy to play any musical instrument: all you have to do is touch the right key at the right time and the instrument will play itself. Johann S.Bach
