Zyex D'Addario String - Medium tension

I've only had the strings on for 3 days.     So far..........

They are very suited to my viola.  For the mid range price that they are, I think they are very nice strings.

The sound is powerful, resonate, and warm.   The c and g strings sound deep and full.

The d string of course is different, but holds it's own as far as sound goes.

The a string is crisp and clean.

The response is good and clean.

They are a soft string, so playing it feels nice on the fingers.

They are staying in tune now, and didn't stretch much at all. I played for hours yesterday and only re-tuned it once.

Overall I am happy with the Zyex strings on this particular viola.   I read a lot of reviews before I decided to try them.  Some said they were metallic and weak, but they are the exact opposite on my instrument.

Thank you, Oma. This is very useful

This is a very well written review and contains some very helpful information for violists looking for information on the Zyex.

Although, they may sound different on someone else's viola, knowing they are soft on the fingers and hold the tune quickly is very good to know for any viola. I found this very helpful and it answered some questions I was wondering about.

I'm not really getting on with Zyexes.

@Fiddlerman's review (below) is 11 years old, so I'm wondering if Pierre still holds by it or if he has moved on since then.

It probably depends a lot on your violin - I'm guessing Pierre's is much brighter than mine: my Breton is very warm and dark and viola-like, and I prefer Dominants on it - Dominant G and D strings are much more powerful than Zyex on my violin (which is good), but I don't find the A weak, as Pierre does.

@Gordon Shumway -

I'm actually using a Zyex 'A' on my Viola, right now - really like it (along side Larsen Virtuoso strings)!  I haven't tried the rest of the Zyex set on my Viola, yet - but might.

'A' strings are an issue for both my violin & viola.

Have you tried the Dominant 'Pro' set, yet?  Or the 'Rondo' set?

I doubt if I'll try Dominant pros - I assume they are pretty expensive.

Maybe once. Maybe I'll get them as a Christmas present!

I don't really want to get into equipment fetishism - I'd like to find my "old reliable" and then just practise.

It does depend a lot on your violin, but I have since that time changed my mind about the Zyex strings. They were great on my violin back then but I've tried them on other instruments and have not been thrilled. It's hard to keep track of my old reviews. LOL

Thanks for asking, and sorry if I misled you.

Not at all. Your review is date-tagged, so it's a case of consumer beware.

I haven't tried Zyex strings myself, but based on what I've heard of them, I get the distinct impression that instruments seem to either love them or hate them, not much in between.

I didn't realise this was a viola thread.

Since I last posted to it, I put the Zyexes on a German factory violin, and they sound great on it.

I've got a cheap Chinese viola, so I will try Zyex viola strings on it to calm it down.

I have used Violin and Viola Zyex strings on my tanks - liked them, but just felt they didn't last very long.  Wanted to put new ones on every 3 months.

That's a shame. In that case I'll look further afield.

You may get more mileage out of them on your instruments & with the music you play.

Their cost still makes them a great option.
