( Kaplan ArtCraft Dark ) was hard and shiny and required a little gentle scraping to start it off.if it is not taking to the bow - I would - in your words - absolutely - GIVE IT A HARD TIME - GO ON GIRL - ROUGH IT UP !!! LOL (but gently !)
And - Congrats on the new fiddle !!!!!! Yee haaa ! Cool !
LOL- thanks- I am using that dark one- after an hour and a half, I have sound, and tennis elbow !
now to the tuning ! I'm happy--

yay! Exciting!!
When I had to rosin up my extra bow, I had to put on some music to try and ignore how long it was taking to do it, lol. For that dark rosin, if you have an old nail file, rough up the top of it with that and it should go on easier. I use the Goldflex, same as Billy, so it doesn't take me as long to get a good enough coating to play.

I think the longest I had to rosin a bow was... well since I listen to music while I rosin I don't know the exact time.. 3 maybe 4 songs? lol... I rosin "good enough" to get playing and then add a little to it each time I play until it feels perfect on the strings. I've never had it not want to work on any one string when working on the others. I only ever used the dark rosin when I got my Concert violin, and I do remember it being tougher to get on the bow at first.

What rosin do you use on your old bow? I agree that it sounds like lack of rosin on the bow. I wonder if something happened to the bow to make the rosin not adhere to the hair for some reason? (can that happen in rare manufacturing situations, @Fiddlerman ?)

Has the bow hair (for whatever reason) been drawn across an "oily" surface at all - that includes your skin? Can't imagine why of course, not something that would normally be done LOL.... As well as wiping it down with a cloth as Mandy suggests - if it has suffered from some such exposure, then if you have access to ethanol, or denatured alcohol ( I use Methylated spirits and it's OK - its like 90% ethanol, rest methanol ) dampen the cloth (don't soak it and keep it away from varnished surface of the violin of course) and give the hair a good rub-down, applying a tad more alcohol if it is evaporating too quickly... Let it dry (should only take minutes), then repeat your rosining process from scratch....
If I had been sawing away for 90 minutes on that block it would have had a deep groove in it by now !

Bow is one day old- I made sure that I never touched any part of the hairs- old poopy bow, when I got it had obvious damage from being touched- so for sure I didn't touch it-- anyways, I don't think I will be doing any cleaning or anything like that today LOL- or maybe never……….. seems-- well, I don't know- I really don't have time today to do much of anything yet. all advice is being registered tho-- thanks

I saw where you were laughing at me in the chat, @BillyG - you are too funny !
I also took a look at my old rosin- I don't even use it that much, and sure enough, there is a big old gouge in it- it was new when I got it. 1.5 hrs of normal working rosin would certainly obliterate the whole bar. LOL
Anyways, I think I am going to go with @damfino "s suggestion of wiping down, and trying the old stuff- Unless of course @Fiddlerman chimes in to stop me.

Woo hoo! Then you know the issue is just the new rosin If you want to try a new one, I really love the Pirastro GoldFlex, it goes on really easy and has a good grip, and wipes off the strings really easy.

Hehehehe ! I was just kidding with yah, as you know. I'm just wicked ! But REALLY PLEASED you got it working with your "old/current" rosin.... Looking forward to hearing your new instrument !
That is quite interesting... wow... Yeah - never experienced that so no real thoughts other than stuff I have read that does sort of suggest a rosin may have a useful shelf-life - although others do argue that they have used the same cake for like 10 years or more (?? possible I suppose - LOL - although sheer curiosity on my part would make me change rosins anyway, just for the sake of trying something different...). The "science" ( if it is that ) behind this "shelf life" thing is supposedly that over time the more volatile compounds gradually leach-out and there is a suggestion that the cake hardens and possibly becomes more brittle.
As I say, I don't really know - just regurgitating stuff I have read in other places...
If there is truth in this - then - I suppose if you don't know how long ago it was actually made, or how long it has been sitting in the manufacturer's store, or the shop finally bought from, maybe that comes into the equation ? Honestly - a bit like buying fresh food - should rosins carry a "Best before" and a "Use before" date on them ? Hahahah Sounds like a "Yes / No" poll question

ya- we might never know for sure- without the date thing- I was wondering if by using the unusable one for as long as I did, whether it left stuff on the bow that was better off without it, but I suppose at some pt, I could try that gasoline thing you were talking about. LOL It is working just fine at this point- BEAUTIFUL !
I am practicing twinkle, twinkle again, and what I can of Susuki one- need some time adjusting to the size, but maybe not so much- really love what I have heard so far.
The only thing I read about rosin said that in humidity (this place is dripping with it)- a lighter color is best. I don't think that had anything to do with the black one not working at all, but……. maybe ? My old one is amber in color.
back in the game !
