Playing my Stentor Conservatoire II is worrying, as I can hear every echo and reverberation inside the instrument and every scrape of the horsehair on the strings, and I'm just hoping it doesn't sound that awful at a distance.

Do fiddles normally sound that bad to the player?

How do you get to hear your fiddle?

1. I can record myself

2. I can get my teacher to play it for me.

3. Is there a 3?

From people who have heard Heiftz and Zookerman up close say they sound like a wood saw when they play, but a few feet away it was Lazer sharp, bow noise doesn't travel very far, you won't hear it a couple of feet away.

Master the Frog and you have mastered the bow.

Yeah, the bow noise is the thing I'm least worried about.

The sympathetic resonances annoy me - on a guitar they enrich the sound, but on my violin it just sounds like ringing!

I just Audacity'd myself. It didn't sound too bad, but I'll try again after a few months' more practice.

A violin often doesn't sound the same away from the instrument as it does under the ear.
I suggest recording yourself but not just in one location. Test different rooms and distances.
