Also note: if it's only the E string you dislike, consider getting an E string of a different brand. It's so common that many shops (both physical and online) sell string sets with the E string substituted for a different brand, at the usual full-set discount.

Many pros use either Gold Label or Goldbrokat E strings with another brand for the other three strings. Larsen and Warchal Amber E strings are also sometimes substituted in. The Kaplan Non-Whistling E is somewhat popular among amateurs.

(Using a different top string is even more common on viola -- the majority of professional violists use either Larsen or Jargar A strings with a different brand for C, G, and D strings.)

When I put the Kaplan Non-Whistling E on my Rudoulf Doetsch warm violin and it was fine for about a week. After that, that E string whistled terribly. I took it off and put the E string that came with the set of strings that I had put on the violin back on. I just took the E string off and put the Kaplan Non-Whistling on just to try it.

I have Kaplan Amos on my new Fiddlerman Concert Deluxe, it came with those, I wanted to try them for a long time. It has the regular Kaplan E string. I have no issues. I actually like the Kaplan Amos on that violin.

For some reason, when I tried that Kaplan Non-Whistling E, it did not hold up and whistled terribly after a week. I guess it truly is made differently from the regular Kaplan Amo E string.

I think that the quality of someone’s bowing has to do with this. My bowing is anything but. Just my experience with the  Kaplan Non-Whistling.

@AndrewH Overall I wasn't crazy about the set at all.  Maybe on my other violin but thanks for the heads up on the possibilities there.

@Mouse It could be the bowing for sure.  I just haven't had the symptoms with zyex, prelude, helicores, vision or the ob's.  the preludes, helicore and zyex were on another fiddle though but even there Its not the soloist.  I'm thinking I had something going on with how I installed the e string.   time will tell.  I'll see how the next couple of weeks play out with the new set.  Its possible Ive changed my mechanics without realizing it.  I'm still very much a new fiddler.  Maybe I'm letting the side of my palm touch the string or something like that.

And sometimes an individual violin just doesn't play well with a particular brand of strings. Sometimes it even happens with extremely popular brands like Dominant that have a reputation for being at least OK on almost every instrument -- there's the odd violin here and there that hates them.

@AndrewH - That is my feeling about Dominants as well. They are at least OK on most instruments. :)

I prefer the Fiddlerman ones over the Dominants. For me, they are easier to play on. I stocked up with the Black Friday sale. They work nice on my pawnshop violin and the $40 violin I bought from a guy who’s uncle used to play it. Definitely played fiddle with it. Musical family, but the nephew doesn’t play violin. He asked for $20, but the violin sounds great and it just looks used, it was worth more than $20. Didn’t want to cheat him. I like the rustic look. That violin will be good with the Fiddlerman strings. Almost sounds like pawnshop violin, more powerful.

Does the way person bows affect which strings work best, too, or is it more the violin wood, setup, etc that is the factor?

Grrr- I overlooked the sale !!!!   I could use a spare set of FM strings as a backup..

Right now in my playing and learning journey - I would say it is all down to the bowing (that is for any one specific set up, on one specific violin, bow, and rosin (!!!!) the only thing changing being the strings)

I had a HORRIBLE time getting used to Larsen Virtuoso - but - eventually my "touch" on the bow settled it down.   Still, for what I tend to play, not my go to string.

But, we're all different - I'm sure they are great strings !

@BillyG Check the site. The sale went beyond Black Friday. May still be on sale. Would check for you but am riding in the car and my phone is too small to do much.
