This is my kind of thread.  Toilet seats.  Miniature naked people.  Lens systems.  And mutants.

While Markcobb is asking sensible questions, here's a silly one?

Can someone explain the toilet seat joke to me, please?

I wasn't sure how culturally-dependent that one would be.

Basically genuine mother-of-pearl (I don't know its name in other languages) is nice stuff if used in the right place in small quantities tastefully. But used too much and in plastic imitation - e.g. on toilet-seats, it's tacky, and we joke about it by calling it mother-of-toilet-seat.

Ah... thanks. We have our own version of toilet seat kitch down here in South Florida:

My violin teacher's toilet seat looks something like this:

BTW, your TIFs sometimes make your posts unreadable. Is that something you've done, or is there something I can do to make them load properly? Judging by the formatting of this post, it's the forum.

And so that I don't hijack this thread, there are some nice things here: -

I quite like this one. I thought it was jade at first, but it's horn. I like the way the button matches the frog.

Also, very tacky.

Mostly on eBay, where I have purchased some.  I also google search violin bow merchants and makers.

I like it, @Irv. My best schoolfriend's violin had a scroll carved like a bearded old man's head. Im pretty sure it was rare and expensive, but I think I mentioned it somewhere recently and received the sneer that it was common, cheap and tacky.

Hi @Gordon Stumway and others.  Perhaps I should create a parallel thread on mutant scrolls?  Until then, I came across a scroll that may be of interest.4AE6674B-762A-4FEE-883C-56257A2CA310.jpegImage Enlarger

Not the baby scroll for me, but I was referring to the Ivory frog. That is cool.885E3FE8-C647-48A8-B621-AE49417D9817.jpegImage Enlarger
