Just got these in the mail and thought I'd send some pictures. I'll mount the chin rests and should rest tonight and see how they feel over the next few days. I'll let you know about the CF bow too.

The bow came very well packaged in a nice hard case.IMG_1052.jpgImage EnlargerIMG_1053.jpgImage EnlargerIMG_1054.jpgImage EnlargerIMG_1055.jpgImage EnlargerIMG_1056.jpgImage EnlargerIMG_1057.jpgImage EnlargerIMG_1058.jpgImage EnlargerIMG_1059.jpgImage Enlarger

Congrats on the new stuff, @Heinrich

As it turns out, I just bought a Wolf forte secondo shoulder rest from Fiddlershop yesterday. There are so many ways it can be adjusted once you've chosen the chinrest that works best for you.

Since I like to hold my violin more to the front than to the left side, this is how I've twisted and attached the Wolf forte secondo:

The low, shoulder side is so low that I can feel the violin on my collar bone when I lift the scroll a bit but love the security of having the Wolf there for me when I need it. I should mention one negative of having the SR so low on that one side... there are some metal attachment bits that get precariously close to the back of my violin. Maybe I'll just wrap the offending part in some scrap leather...

... or maybe I'll grow up one day and start using a shoulder rest with less extreme twisting :-)

Thanks, I'll let you guys know how it goes after tonight. The shoulder rest looks pretty intense so we'll see how that goes. Good to know I have some help if I get stuck.

Just a blundering beginner here, having fun with my equipment. That said, I took one look at that pic I posted of my Wolf setup and immediately screwed the high side down to something less dramatic (and more stable :-) So I'm looking to learn from your solution too.

So, after a few days of practice with each piece here is where I landed. I just couldn't make them work for me.

The Flesch center mount was pressing down on the tailpiece so I wasn't able to really test that. I was really hoping the Stuber would work and felt ok at first but after about 30 min I really felt it dig in under my chin. I thought a higher lip on the chin rest would be nice, but even with adjusting the shoulder rest I couldn't keep it from hurting. The Wolfe shoulder rest was very adjustable but again I struggled with it and it just wouldn't sit on my shoulder. I'm a little bummed because I was really hoping they would give me a more stable hold but I guess back to the drawing board.

I ended up keeping the bow and i really enjoy it. So much more response from it than my old one. It is taking me some time to adjust my bow pressure. Really grips the strings.

I'm glad to hear that the bow "fits" at least.

I think the general wisdom goes that one should find a comfortable chinrest first and then get a shoulder rest that works.

Am I correct that you're looking for a high chinrest? If yes, you can check out the SAS height adjustable at Fiddlershop or look up the "wavechinrest".

Re: shoulder rests, I mentioned above that I had just switched from the Wolf to the  Bonmusica (which I used for the first 6 months of my violin adventure.) The Bonmusica is as a grippy and bendable a shoulder rest as you can get. It even hooks over your shoulder. The down side is mainly that there's a lot of hardware involved (the price of stability and adjustability.)

This is how I had it adjusted:

Why did I switch? I did want to try something less of a contraption (although the fit was great.) The trigger was that I stripped a double threaded screw and have a temporary fix (see the white plastic dowel on the shoulder-side foot) until I can locate a replacement.

Holly has a great point. We have seen many violins that are scratched from using the Bonmusica Shoulder Rest. They are great in many ways but a lot of metal and IMAO, a bit scary. :(
That being said, I know a lot of players who won't use anything else.

Thanks guys, I think I need to take a step back. I'm going to check my posture and violin placement and see if that will correct a few things before I go down the rabbit hole again. Maybe just start with a cloth over the current chin rest etc. I want to be comfortable but not over-engineer it.
