So, Iβve been playing about a year and purchased the fiddlershop soloist this past December. I have joined a small chamber string group with around 20 members and we get together and practice for 2 months and present a Christmas and summer concert of about 20 songs. I play 3rd violin but have a goal to be 1st violin in letβs say 4 years. Most of the group is level 3, although 3 are level 6 and are in a chamber orchestra. I have gotten hooked on watching YouTube videos of fiddlerman demonstrating violins for folks and want a Ming jiang Zhu Β 909 or Scott Cao 1500. Should one of those be a future goal or should I just try and get the soloist to sound like fiddlerman when he plays it. I think I know the answer but want to hear it from you guys.

If you want one of those and you can afford it, get it, but don't do it under the misconception it'll turn you into 1st violin. And making the Soloist sound like it does when Fiddlerman plays it? Good luck with that in only a few more years. Not trying to be discouraging, but that's the reality. My instructor can make my cheap VSO sound better than I can make my good fiddle, and that's after 3 yrs of playing. If course, I'm pretty terrible. π©
If you haven't reached the limit of the Soloist, and in only a year playing (if I understand you correctly) I'm guessing not, then keep working with that one if money's tight. But if you're liquid, get another fiddle! Life's short. Careful you don't get GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) though, or specifically here VAS. Fun 'ailment' to have , if a tad pricey to cure.
Bad times make for good stories.

Oh boy - If only money wasn't an issue! I went and watched the vid, love it! - I guess you gotta do what you can afford...although you were probably already thinking that. I go in a little circle thinking maybe better bow, maybe better violin.... and then I get a little better on mine and it renews my love for it....and it's kinda enlightening to hear my teacher play it and it doesn't even sound like my violin!....good luck, I do hope you get to buy one in the near futurity tho!
